My friend's son is trying to decide between the two schools.
The family is concerned about the cost but want to give the son the best overall college experience. The kid is an athlete and a good student; outgoing.

U Rochester is well worth the extra cost. It is much better than UB.

rochester

my cousin went to buffalo and she said it was hell
she ended up getting her bach from delaware and now she's at nyu for her master

Buffalo can offer a good education, but the campus is downright miserable. The worst thing to ever happened to the City of Buffalo (besides for the curse of McKinley) was putting the campus in a suburban swamp as opposed to in the city. The second worse thing to ever happen was not expanding the subway all the way to said campus.

Hard to tell with the limited info - you said the student was an athlete - Buffalo is DI and Rochester DIII, but Rochester's BB team is nationally ranked. Also depends on what program the student is taking as far as which Buffalo campus he would be at (North or South) - South is comparable to Rochester's campus, but still not as nice. For best overall experience I'd pick Rochester if $$ are not an issue, for the better geographical diversity if anything (vs almost all NY students)
