My son is a junior taking US History. Does it make sense for him to take the US History I test now (during Spring Break) while the first semester of the class is fresh in his mind? Or should he take both tests over the summer with some additional time for review? Most of the schools he is considering require US history as a general ed course and accept the CLEP exams. Most require a score of 50 but at least one wants a 60. I don't see the point of waiting and taking them next year when he's forgotten this class.

Is he in ap history? If not, does the history class he is currently taking cover all of the information on both cleps? For example our school teaches us history in 2 classes (unless youre in apush). One class goes from columbus to the civil war and the other from reconstruction to present. As far as cleps go with scoring, a 50 usually corresponds to around 65-70% from what i have read (but the scale changes for every test). If he has learned all of the stuff on he exams, go for it. Go on amazon and buy a copy of princeton reviews “cracking the ap history exam” and a copy of the clep study guide. After reading the cracking book, he should take the 4 practice tests (2 in cracking and 2 in the clep study guide). If he scores 75%+ on these practice tests, im highly confident he can easily pull a 50. If he knows the stuff, it may only take 10-12 hours of prep. If he is not well versed on all of the material, it will take closer to 30 (just an estimate). Hope this helps. Good luck

I would suggest paying the $10 to download the CLEP study guide and practice test from their website. Taking the practice exam will give your son an idea of the difficulty level of this exam, plus the wording used on the lead-in questions and multiple-choice answers.

I would also suggest that you/your son check out a couple of websites (free-clep-prep and degreeforum.net) to read what has been posted about these exams. If your son feels he is ready to at least take History of the US I after taking at least one practice exam and reading the material provided, I would go ahead and schedule it.
