APUSH and SAT II US History-Can they be studied for at the same time in the same way?

My son is signed up to take the SAT II in US HIstory in May, followed a few days later by the AP USH exam. Can he study for the SAT II from the AP study guide, or are the tests quite different?

I did the same thing that your son is doing last year. I was definitley more prepared for the AP test than I was for the SATII, mainly because I had a few more days of cramming. But the material tested on the two tests is very similar, so your son should be ok. THere is no writing on the SATII, just 80 multiple choice (I think its 80) whereas the AP test has 3 essays. I got a 700 on the SAT and a 5 on the AP so I did farely well on both tests.
Personally, I thought the SAT test was harder than the AP, but I know people who thought the reverse.

Oh, and if you already have AP study materials, there is no need to buy SATII study books. They cover the same thing. I only used my AP books from school.

I thought the SAT US History test was harder than the AP as well, especially since the AP multiple-choice questions are so much more general. The SAT questions are slightly different--I think they're more specific than the ones on the AP. Also the SAT test had a bunch of graphs and tables, and they take SO long to examine to find the right answer. It was actually kind of frustrating. But if your son take the SAT II in US History and feels confident that he did well (650 or above is pretty good, it's like a 4 on the AP test), then your son won't really need to study much more for the AP. The real difference is that on the AP you have to write 3 essays: a DBQ where you read documents and use that to help you answer the question, and 2 FRQ's, or free-response questions, where they ask general questions, like "How did the colonization patterns of the English differ from those of the French and Spanish in the 16th century?" There are examples if you go to College Search - SAT Registration - College Admissions - Scholarships and search for AP US History.

Thanks so much!
