US News 2008 Rankings- Predictions

"One of the nice (few) things about the USNWR is that it forces university administrations to try to improve their schools every year so that they can have a favorable rank."

-I’m sorry, but if the UsNews ranking is the reason why a university official would want to improve his school, then that’s a serious problem.

"So while the ranking may not matter at all to you, it matters a great deal to them."

Again... If one takes pleasure in knowing that UsNews thinks that there are 97 schools that are better than his, and he STILL cares about the rankings, then so be it.

It's not "the" reason, it's a reason.

That's not the way they look at it. It's more locally, i.e the two low ranked rival schools. Do you think a school ranked 108 is going to care about Harvard or Princeton? They're more concerned about their similar peer schools and with this respect, they should care about their rank. What's the problem with lower ranked schools wanting to improve their USNWR position?

This justification makes no sense. They should care more about the fact that there are more schools ahead of it then say a more selective school? I dont think that's the thinking behind it.

If anything, the rankings would suggest that they should find one of the 97 schools that are "better" to attend.

That's utterly ridiculous to assume or say.

Why is that ridiculous?

Is the title of the ranking not "America's Best Colleges"? Wouldn't that suggest that those ranked lower are in some way "worse" than those ranked higher? That is, a school ranked 98th, would be 97 schools "worse" than the one at number 1.

Stony Brook's grads count the president of Stanford, the leader of the imaging team for the Cassini mission to Saturn, a pulitzer award winning reporter for the Washington Post.(Thanks to PR)

Somehow I don't think many SUNY grads are slinking around the dark corners of society after graduation.

I never asserted anything to the contrary. If you look at UsNews, however, it paints a different picture.

No it doesnt--it just says that ___ amount of schools are better. So?

MICHIGAN TO #1!!! hahah : )

kk - maybe you didn't realize it, but there are over 3000 4 year universities in this country.

So being in the top 120 or whatever they list is an accomplishment. The people attending these schools are generally still significantly above truly average(not what you think is average or bad). The 50+ schools are also competing against different schools. People care whether Pitt or Penn St. get's ranked higher, or which SUNY is highest, and so on. None of these schools offer 'bad' educations, they are in the top 10% in the country.

I'm sorry that your elitist views cloud your ability to reason. I hope that if I choose to attend Northwestern I do not meet many people like you.

Hold on KK, why is it that USNews is a useless pile of doo when you're ranting about NU's number but somehow it becomes a valuable way to get a picture on Stony Brook? You're just stirring the pot aren't you?

I only look at the top 25 anyhoo, are there more schools than that?

No Thethoughtprocess, merely drone camps producing workers for when you ascend from Duke.

"kk - maybe you didn't realize it, but there are over 3000 4 year universities in this country."

I do realize this, and like I said, most of those schools just flat out aren't that good.

"So being in the top 120 or whatever they list is an accomplishment."

-No, it's really not.

"I'm sorry that your elitist views cloud your ability to reason."

How can you say that some schools are "in the top 10% in the country", then accuse me of being an elitist? Hypocritical at best.

Like I've said: If one takes pleasure in knowing that UsNews thinks that there are 97 schools that are better than his, and he STILL cares about the rankings, then so be it.

"I hope that if I choose to attend Northwestern I do not meet many people like you."

-Say that when you're actually in college.

"Hold on KK, why is it that USNews is a useless pile of doo when you're ranting about NU's number but somehow it becomes a valuable way to get a picture on Stony Brook? You're just stirring the pot aren't you?"

-I accept the outcomes of the ranking..... except Chicago of course.... After a certain point, however, people just shouldn't care about the rankings.

KK, are you really a junior in college?

No, I am not..........

lol, note the '08....

ramses, yeah I was wondering where they all came from

Doesn't '08 mean class of....?

thethoughtprocess, one shouldn't wonder, it'll give you frown lines.:)

"Doesn't '08 mean class of....?"

Yes......

It's beyond me that people like him are allowed a college education...
