Hey, its College Confidential and everyones anonymous (aside from admissions directors)...so no worries, don't pick on KK. BTW, if '08 means the same thing for him (her?) as it does for me, than that means he (she's?) a senior.

Individual spots in US News only matter in the top 20, other than that its the ranges the schools fall in. My opinion. I also track PSU, Lehigh, Pitt, and Auburn because I have ties to all of them, other than that I just see what elite school ends up being ranked higher than an almost completely equal similar elite school.

Anonymous or not, when one makes an outlandish assertion and sticks to it, they probably should expect some flak.(And some people may see KK's rather rude statements as a form of picking on others.)

Your opinion on the Rankings are quite different than KK's. You haven't suggested that anyone at number 98 should be embarrassed to admit it. One would hope that a senior would have developed more awareness regarding the real world, as it's more than likely he'll face employers who just might have gone to any of the other 3,000 schools beside NU.

Well I was reading this thread and one thing I'll have to say is sure, a 98 ranking might not be all that glorious, but the fact that the school moved up in rankings so much is important, to the school at least.

I don't know why people get so ****y about the damn rankings in the first place.

“Anonymous or not, when one makes an outlandish assertion and sticks to it, they probably should expect some flak.(And some people may see KK's rather rude statements as a form of picking on others.)”

-My statement is neither outlandish nor rude, and yes I do stick to it. Just because you don’t agree with what I’m saying doesn’t mean it’s rude. Also, I have no reason to pick on others; I, along with everyone else on this forum, express my opinions.

“Your opinion on the Rankings are quite different than KK's. You haven't suggested that anyone at number 98 should be embarrassed to admit it.”

-I’m saying it shouldn’t matter at that level; if for the simple fact that UsNews concludes that there are 97 schools which are ‘better’ than yours. This is, at the very best, troubling to me.

“One would hope that a senior would have developed more awareness regarding the real world”

-Indeed I have, and it is as such that I express my opinion. I’d hope that a 40 or 50 something parent would have better things to do than trying to personally attack people in a college forum.

“as it's more than likely he'll face employers who just might have gone to any of the other 3,000 schools beside NU.”

-I do all the time, and you best be sure that if someone said to me “I go to school X, and it’s ranked 98th on UsNews,” I would laugh in his face for even bringing that up.

You cant be that dense--it's entirely rude. There's no difference between someone from #98 caring and you caring about NU...You dont get some special right to care because your school is super selective.

He never said someone from Stony Brook lacks the right. He said it's pointless to bring up your school's rank if it is nothing special. Why brag about your school's ranking when it is barely cracking the top 100 on that particular ranking? That's not to say the school is bad, but #100 on any list, IMO, is not such an accomplishment. More befitting would be to mention that Stony Brook is perhaps New York's best public school.

FWIW, think about Reed College. Fantastic school really, but because it is ranked ~#53 (and for personal reasons) the school doesn't go around touting it's US News ranking. People in the know are aware of the school's quality; they need not allude to some ranking to say that it's a top 60 LAC. On one hand that would degrade the school (in reality, it is one of the top 20 LACs in the nation) and saying that your school is #53 (on a list of 200 or so schools) doesn't really "wow" anyone.

My point was that someone from #98 or whatever can ask or inquire where they think their school is going. He said before they should be more concerned with the fact that there are 97 schools ahead. I disagree...

Being in the top 10% is something to brag about for some. If Harvard was put at 98 they wouldn't brag about it, however, if a school that was less outwardly prestigious was ranked 98, they would brag about it. Same situation is at work for Reed.

If you are competing with students looking at schools from 90-120, being #98 is of note. If you are competing for students looking at schools 20-50, you hide it.

Being among the top 10% is an accomplishment for many, and these schools offer a very good education whether you want to acknowledge that or not. It may be more specific to programs rather than general strength(for instance, #70 MSU has a Physics program that is top 2 in the nation, alternating with MIT for the top spot).

But the SUNY ranked the highest will brag about being that, same with whichever instate and so on. Students care about what separates them from their peers, if they were looking at 5 SUNY's and went to the highest ranked one, they migh brag abotu that fact.

I have not had time to look through this whole thread, really just the last few pages, so excuse me if I am repeating what others have said. If you are going to care about rankings, anyone going to a school in the top 100 should feel great, given how many schools there are in this country. Having said that, I think it is ridiculous to take the rankings too seriously. Yes, they measure something(s) but they leave out a lot too. They are something like an IQ test, measuring certain kinds of intelligence but ignoring others. Many brilliant artists don't measure as brilliant on an IQ test. Someone can measure extremely high and yet have aspergers, therefore no social intelligence. Colleges are more than their number.

"Being in the top 10% is something to brag about for some."

-Not when the other 90% isn't even that good to begin with.... But if you really think it's that big of an accomplishment to be ranked higher than the likes of Biola University and Montana State University, then so be it.

"But the SUNY ranked the highest will brag about being that, same with whichever instate and so on. Students care about what separates them from their peers, if they were looking at 5 SUNY's and went to the highest ranked one, they migh brag abotu that fact."

-Ah, so they should look at the rankings if they want to make fun of their peers. It's so clear now..... That’s like saying: "Ha ha, I'm slightly less morbidly obese than you!"

"Id hope that a 40 or 50 something parent would have better things to do than trying to personally attack people in a college forum."

KK, I'm a mom who just got one kid into school and am helping the second in the process. I'd say my hanging out at CC is far less odd than a senior in college who seems to have nothing better to do than try to reassure himself he's at a good school.

It's great that you see the Rankings as bragging rights but that's not what they were meant to be. From #1 to whatever, the rankings are there for people to get a sense of what places might be a good fit.

haha, you guys have to this this is at least a little funny

Hey, sorry if this has already been discussed, but does anyone know when the new rankings are coming out? I've heard a lot of people say August, but does anyone know an exact date or a certain time in August? When did it come out last year?
