us news rankings

so it seems like Smith’s declined quite a bit this year (to 19th) and I was wondering what people’s thoughts were.

my feelings:

it’s going to go up next year, since the number of applicants, selectivity, and the endowment all increased and the student body decreased (therefore more expenditure per student)

smith’s attempts to increase economic diversity are great for the college and the student body…but unfortunately are not great for rankings.

I wonder why “peer assessment rating” is so valued in US news rankings and what we can do to improve it.

though smith has fluctuated about 6 spots in the rankings since i started to consider it, I don’t think the quality of education has changed at all. i hope that’s a message that reaches high school students (and, for my sake, law school admissions counselors!)

The stats that Xiggi posted in the parents' forum show that 2008 was just a bad year for Smith rankings-wise. The data that will be used next year should bring Smith's rankings up a bit.

Number of Applications (2006 2007 2008 2009)
3047 3304 2993 3408

Number Accepted
1616 1705 1694 1600

Changes in Application Numbers
+8% -9% +14%

Acceptance Rate
53% 52% 57% 47%

Smith is a fabulous school, whatever the rating. It is amazing.

Same feeling here.
