US Presidential Scholar Nomination Update

Oops and I forgot to add-I’ll be updating my colleges about it, along with a couple other awards.

^ Congratulations! Were you nominated for the arts or for your SATs, or both?

@cliu913 That’s not true, I am from Texas and got nominated. @renaissancedad how can I get nominated for arts if I am not participant in the Presidential Scholar Art program. Does anybody know the qualifications to get nominated for technology, that might be me in my case. Also will my SAT be considered in the next round again?

I have no idea what the qualifications are for the new CTE. The website just says that candidates must “demonstrate academic achievement in career and technical programs” and “are nominated by their state’s Chief State School Officer”. I have no clue how those decisions are made.

Arts nominees are participants in the National YoungArts program at the national level. I don’t know whether it’s possible to be nominated both based on test scores and on arts participation. @Larensea attends an arts specialty school, so I was curious.

@russiaguy I called them to verify and that’s what they told me. What did you end up having? Maybe they misheard me?

@renaissancedad for my SATs! Lots of people at my school do choose to try for YoungArts ever year, but I didn’t. I don’t THINK it’s possible to be nominated for both…but I’m not sure??? I’m interested to see how it goes, because my application will be more similar to the art people’s applications in terms of activities and stuff than to those of other academic nominees. So we’ll see!

^ Good luck!

I’m late to this party, but I’m candidate from PA (1600 CR+M)… I was wondering if anyone else is really struggling with these essays? I thought I’d be able to reuse essays I wrote during the college application process, but I am stuck! Would love to connect with some kindred spirits

What photo do I use? I think a college asked me to upload a photo I thought was important and I just didn’t apply lmao

The Activities and Work Experiences format is also killing me… I wish they used the same format as the Common App or allowed us to submit resumes :((

@renaissancedad
My d was nominated for scholar with a 1580 SAT. However, I think she could have pursued nomination in the Arts- dance. We attended a convention this past weekend and, as usual d was picked out of ballroom full of dancers (approx. 200) by professional choreographers who work in the industry to demonstrate. She usually wins a scholarship to the next event every year, but decided not to audition this year since she is a graduating senior and probably would not use the scholarship. She is at studio with top notch faculty; all graduates of highly ranked university ballet school, including being taught by university professors. She has trained at studios in LA and NYC and been asked to demonstrate in classes taken with professionals. She is trained in all genres of dance and excels in commercial dance the most. I have calculated that she has danced more than 10,000 hours. This weekend I had parents who watched her demonstrate in class tell me that they think she should go to LA and audition to work professionally. They told me what I have been hearing for years… when d is on stage their eyes are drawn to watching her and she is mainly the person they watch the whole time. Sigh… sometimes it is tough in life to give up an artistic talent in life when you are talented in that area. However- she is equally, if not more talented academically, so she is going to take the full ride scholarship she has been offered. As someone with a child in the Arts, perhaps you can understand this is a painful decision to make.

^ It is indeed. Both my brother and I chose to go to top Universities over top music conservatories. It’s a difficult choice. My brother even took a semester off from college to go to a conservatory to see if he didn’t feel differently. It can be difficulty to give up something in which you’ve put so much time and effort, and achieved so much success. Hopefully your daughter will have made the right choice. It sounds like she is talented in many areas. Good luck!

in calculating ACT scores for the program, do they only use the 4 section scores or do they also use writing?

just submitted! glad it’s in.

does anyone know when Semifinalists will be announced?

Google is your friend. http://www2.ed.gov/programs/psp/faq.html#notification

Anyone know where stuff will be posted, I keep checking the mail for semifinalist announcement because the website says semifinalist notifications “Will be mailed” in mid-april, but does anyone have an exact date or know where to find semifinalist announcement?

Thanks!

They also have a Facebook page called U.S. Presidential Scholars Program and they post an update whenever cuts to the next round are made. Good luck!
