USAFA Summer Seminar

Redhead, which week did you go to summer seminar?

btw, I entirely agree. It was a great experience and you should definitely go if you get the chance.

I went to session B... basically I was in the best element ever! Haha, the B1 Bombers! :) What about you?

SAT/ACT scores are required for application to the academy, but PSAT scores are fine for SS. Keep in mind that they are not trying to keep you out of the academy. They are looking for good reasons to let you in. Give them the good reasons and you'll be enjoying BCT along with everyone else.

BTW Merry Christmas everyone! Hope you're all with your families.

Sorry for not being clear, but I meant for Summer Seminar because I know that you have to have SAT/ACT for application to the academy. My PSAT scores for the one time I took it weren't as nice as I wanted them to be and my SAT scores are much higher than those for my PSAT. Rephrasing my original question: Do SAT scores supersede PSAT scores in the application for Summer Seminar?

From what I understand, if you send them your SAT scores then you don't have to send them your PSAT scores. I'm pretty sure you only need one of the college board test, be it ACT, SAT, or PSAT.

I went to session B also, but I must say that my element was the best. A-10 Beavers- "Dam it!"
I had to miss two regents to go, but it was definitely worth it.

What regents did you miss Bree89? I am in the same situation as you were because I have regents in New York and will most likely miss a regents no matter what session I go to. How did missing two regents affect your admissions process? Greatly or just a little?

Missed my editing time for the last post, but Bree89, assuming you are from New York, how did you get credit for your regents classes without taking the regents exam?

Missing the two regents didn't affect my admissions process at all ... for here or any other school I think. I missed physics and history - history I just took over the summer and it got added onto my transcript in place of the final I took. Physics I don't have to take at all because they didn't give it over the summer and I already have enough credits for an advanced regents diploma. Talk to your guidance counselor... mine helped me with all of this. Chances are they will be able to straighten everything out with Albany. About getting credit for the class - my guidance counselor helped me with that too. Basically I got a 99 in physics so it didn't matter that I didn't take a regents, my school was willing to give me credit anyway (I'm taking AP this year also).

Hopefully my school will give me credit for the classes because I have similar grades. Although at my school you have to take both the regents and the final. The final counts as 1/5 of your overall grade for the class and I guess the regents is just for credit towards the advanced regents diploma and showing how much you learned form the class. I want to go so much, I just really hope that things can get straightened out so that I can both go and get credit for my classes somehow. Thanks for your help though. Now for a question for anybody who has gone to ss. How are all of the people organized? Is it just a whole mass of flights and you are assigned one and you travel around with them all day or is it the regular structure with group then squadron then flight?

You are organized into Flights and Elements. Elements are groups of 5 to 7. Each Flight will have several Elements. When you are not attending classes you will travel with your Element. You will have designated element time. You may get to have a party after doolie for a day. We had pizza and soda, nice break. Then there is the official ceremony at the end...fancy food, dress up, and a dance. Here is a video from my SS.

There were 12 people in my element. Each element has a cadet who is in charge and who leads you throughout the week. The cadre are all pretty cool; they'll hang out and answer all your questions and some of them will stay in touch with you after you leave and are going through the admissions process. Basically every day you meet up with your element somewhere in the dorm building (if you're a girl you'll probably have to walk about two miles down the halls just to get to your cadre's room :)), walk to breakfast, go to a seminar, eat lunch in Mitch's with your element, go to another seminar, meet up with your element for intramurals, go to dinner, and then you either have free time or will do something with your element. One of the days they treat you like a doolie, and that's actually pretty fun. You'll enjoy it.

Ahhh I see. I went to an encampment for Civil Air Patrol and we spent all of our time with our respective flights and weren't divided into elements. I guess that they were just using the element and flight names in name only and you really never assembled into a flight to do drill or something like that, right? 12 is a pretty large number to have in just one element. Also, did you guys ever do any drill while you were there? When did you guys do pt? Did you do it every morning and what kinds of exercises did you do with it?

As far as drill goes, there was one seminar where we learned to march and comply with different commands, but that was about it, as far as I remember. We did PT in the morning before breakfast, but it wasn't too bad. I think the most we did was run around the terrazzo for less than 10 minutes, and then line up according to element on the grass for flutter kicks, push ups, jumping jacks, and that kind of thing. Then in the afternoon before dinner, when we were done with our seminars for the day, we would go do intramurals with our respective elements (basketball, swimming, football, etc.). On doolie day (where the cadre try to treat you like a four degree) you do the same morning PT routine, but before PT you will stand in the hallway of the dorm building and call minutes. Every 5 minutes, you yell out the menu for the morning meal and the uniforms that the cadres are supposed to wear that day. In between calling minutes, you will do pushups, flutter kicks, arm circles, recitations from the memorization sheet you are given at the beginning of the week, and anything else your cadre instructs you to do. Then for 3 hours (I think???) after seminars you go to different stations for a beast simulation. They had competitive events you did with your element, and also just more pushups, flutter kicks, marching, some yelling, and running. On that day you will also march with your element to meals and stuff. You will also do a practice CFA... that's all I can think of. :) It’s a total blast!

Cool! Hoping I can go and thanks for the info.

Does the application open up at 12 midnight their time or 12 central standard time, IM SO PUMPED!!!!!!!!
