USC 2009 transfer thread

how do we see last year's USC transfer thread?

archieg: you can get into USC as CLAS or another major and potentially take lower division communication courses that first year. After that, you can apply based on your GPA and the coursework you would have completed. According to my friend in Annenberg, it's really easy to do. He's says there's always an influx of other majors that apply and join comm, pr, or journalism.

CaptainRodeo--here it is, all 588 pages...

When you guys say that most sophomores will get SGR, do you mean current sophomores (junior transfers), or current freshman (Sophomore transfers)

current freshman (sophomore transfers)

Does anyone know how long it takes to update our status. Cause I've faxed a couple of weeks ago, and I went yesterday to USC...and still no changes. Should I be worried?

what does it currently say?

That it still needs my h.s transcript. That is I faxed them last week, I got a confirmation email, and I walked them in Mon.

If you faxed it and got the confirmation then all is well. It takes them awhile sometimes to get everything in order.

I think USC is pretty good on confirmation upon receiving your materials. I mean I sent a portfolio to every school that I applied to and USC is the only one that actually sent me an email saying that they've received my stuff.
And when I sent my high school transcript they updated the status page after a week.

Hello everyone,

I'm currently a NYU freshman majoring in Econ thinking about transferring to USC Marshall for junior year. I've looked around Marshall's website and this forum but I couldn't find a bunch of information. If you guys could help me that would be greatly appreciated =D

My questions are:

What is generally the GPA expected from a 4 year university esp like NYU? My GPA from 1st semester ain't great but I should be able to pull my first year average to around 3.5 this semester.

I got a 4 on the Calc AB AP exam, but it was the subscore from the BC exam. Does that mean I fulfill the requirement for Marshall? I really don't want to take another semester of Calc just to fulfill this.

Can someone give me the real opinion of Marshall? I really don't have the time to look at multiple pages on the forum...

Thanks a lot guys!

Taiwaneseterror - Well according to USC, they don't discriminate on which college you are attending to transfer (that's what they say). But if that is true and you do want to attend Marshall School of Buisness, then the average GPA for admit is a 3.8 for Marshall. As for the AP exam, I don't believe it fulfills the Business Calculus prereq.

Marshall is a great undergraduate business school that is ranked somewhere in the top #15 (US News & World Report 2009) and somewhere at top #20 (Business Week 2009). Another fact is that 17% of transfer students that were accepted according the 08-09 "Transferring to USC" brochure came from outside of California. But I'm sure you're qualified to be admitted for sure into USC since you are attending NYU, just do the prereq's (English that is equivalent to Writ, Business Calculus, Micro and Macro Econ) and since your applying as junior standing like me, then do the Recommended Accounting 1 and 2 courses.

If your majoring in Economics, I don't really think Marshall is the right place. Apply to their Letters and Arts in Science for Economics. Why don't you apply to NYU Stern (my dream school next to USC)?

thanks bitterlemon and hippo, maybe in looking into it more than I should

I actually called them about the same situation. On my OASIS page it says that they need my HS transcript, and right below, it says that they already got it. I called Admissions about this, and be aware:

I was told that they need an OFFICIAL HS transcript that includes date of graduation. I had to contact my HS about this because apparently they sent them a transcript that didn't include this. So I would advise that you dig into it just to avoid any surprises in the next 1-2 months.

hey Taiwan on the marshall supplemental app they do ask for a score of a 4 or 5 on the ap calc test, so I think that it does fulfill the requirement.

Guys, I'm kinda torn....

ASSUMING I get into SC this year, I can't pick between Business, accounting, or communications.

I wanna go on to law school after my undergraduate degree, but I also want to get my foot through the door in hollywood: internships, etc.

What's a good degree for this, and for when I go onto law? Any advice?

Economics would probably be the best choice in terms of preparation. Accounting might also work well, seeing as you need to be studied in lots of policy stuff.

All in all though, just major in something that genuinely interests you. This way you won't struggle to pull a high GPA. This is best given that law school admissions are generally a numbers game (GPA/LSAT).

ps. to substantiate, the top 3 majors that produce kids with the highest LSAT scores are, 1. Math, 2. Economics, 3. Philosophy. I'm too lazy to find the site where I read this, but if you google it, you'll likely find it.

archieg - If you really want to get your foot through the door in Hollywood then try for Cinematic Arts (ranked #1). But if you're deciding from those three majors, communications is definantly better than accounting and business if you want to go for Hollywood jobs.

Hey arch, I know what you mean. I work for a law firm and I have asked this ? before. They recommend communications. It's one of those majors that are really versatile. Some of the lawyers here, majored in communications before going into law school at usc. But it's like what grey said, it has to be something that intrest you, you have to be comfortable with it. You'll know.

Grey- I know I hand delivered the offical one and I beileve it had my graduation date and faxed an unofficail one. My h.s has been really bad with all of this. I'm gonna try and call again.
