USC 2010 Transfer Thread

YoungCollegeGirl, you can change it in Part II. Part I simply serves as a way for you to be entered into their system. It has absolutely no weight on admission. You can always edit that info in Part II up until you officially submit your application. I can’t really say which would make acceptance greater. I couldn’t find anything on it either. To increase your chances, make sure that you have all the prereqs done or close to being done. Lots of luck!

I actually have a second question, about financial aid. I know that freshman applicants turn in both their financial aid and admissions applications first, and therefore most likely get most of the scholarship money. However, I will DEFINITELY need financial aid, as my family doesn’t make that much. Does that mean I’ll get next to nothing since I’m a transfer, even if I need it, because the freshmen get most of it?

mrkman: Okay, perfect. Thank god, I was really worried! Thanks for your help. [:

I just finished part II of the application today. I need to wait on my customized PDFs to request transcripts and then it’s a matter of time. Wish me luck and good luck to all those that are applying with me. Fight on! :)

Hey all,

I’m new to this board. =)

I’ll be transferring from California State University Northridge with a few classes from LATTC.

Major=Public Relations
Units Completed: 30
Units in Progress: 13
GPA as it stands= CSUN (3.54); LATTC (4.0)

Should we wait until our first quarter/semester is over in December/January to send transcripts and turn in the application, or can we do it now and just update them later?

I’m waiting until after my transcript comes out so I can show what I’m enrolled in for the spring at my current college.

All,

My admissions counselor told me that the average gpa of accepted transfers for 2009 was “between” a 3.7 and a 3.8." Does anybody have the ACTUAL gpa? For 2008 it was listed in the transfer brochure as 3.65.

Keep in mind (not to give false hope or anything) but USC does admit students that have a lower gpa than what they state. well all colleges do since each student is different. however, unlike most schools usc doesnt have a separate fall and spring transfer time so the gpas they report are only for their incoming fall students. often times they will admit students as spring students if they feel that student is fit for USC but may not fit the scores theyd like to show on their brochures. haha i’m a good example of that. 3.2 gpa right here. GOOD LUCK <3

YoungCollegeGirl, there are transfer scholarships available, which depend on grades of course, but USC is one the best, if not the best, private school in the country when it comes to giving financial aid. If you are a California resident they expect you to get the CalGrant. You must also fill out the CSS Profile along with FAFSA. I believe the FAFSA determines financial aid from the government (grants, stafford loans, etc.) while the CSS Profile (and USC’s own formula) determines how much money USC will give/your family will contribute. I know USC is pricey, but I’ve heard that they can give great fin aid packages. It would definitely help me out too.

Is anyone else having problems with the application website (USC Connect?). I’m using IE 8 and none of the pages will load for me, or they throw errors.

mrkman, how and when do u fill out the CSS profile? is it during part 2 of the application?

The CSS Profile is actually done through the College Board. Unlike FAFSA, this type of financial aid application is not free. Application for Fall 2010 can be filled out now and it is much more thorough than FAFSA. With the FAFSA of course you must wait until January 1, 2010.

You can visit: [CSS/Profile - student financial aid application](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>How to Complete the CSS Profile® – BigFuture | College Board)

I have a question myself.

My current situation: I have a 3.7UW gpa, and am attending Texas State University.

At the end of this current fall semester I will be at 21 completed/transferable credit hours.

My highschool career was mediocre at best due to my passion of competitive hockey and some emotional situations I was going through regarding my parents and their divorce. My graduating GPA was a 2.7, and my SAT scores from highschool were Above Average, but nothing USC quality(2000 combined or higher).

Therefore, When I send in my application I will have less than 30 credit hours completed(21 completed, 12 pending spring).

I do plan on interviewing with an admissions member, because I am a personable person, and I think it will bode well for me to get my story across, as well as my passion for the university.

In the part II section of the application, should I write my reasoning behind my sub-par highschool performance in the “Optional-box” section of the app.?

I find they can look at it two ways: 1) Here is a kid that suffered through some things, and had a passion get in the way of academic performance, but since then is continually proving himself in the college ranks or 2) His lack of “time-management” and ability to cope with things going on in his life is not respecatble at a premium institution like USC.

I’m not sure which way to go on this, and I would love to hear any feedback as to what I should do in my situation.

Sincerely,
Beau

The college admissions counselors love to see the upward trend in grades as it shows maturity. I am doing the same in the “optional” section of the application as my first semester of college was not what I wanted in terms of grades. As long as you properly justify it and show that you are committed to higher education, I see no reason why they would put down the fact that life happens and you have gone on to beter focus on school. This might be something great to talk about in your actual essay as to how much you’ve grown and how you feel you are a fit for USC, unless you’ve already picked a different topic. They probably will look at high school grades, but a strong fall/spring semester will help your case.

I appreciate your advice! As far as the essay’s go Ill most likely end up doing 2 out of the 3 prompts, but im working on the prompt containing Edison, and reflecting on a challege i overcame through persistence.

So far my title is Persistence:Leading Me Into My Future

My thesis: Much like Thomas Edison, I have used persistence to overcome emotional pain, financial struggle, and stacking odds to become an influence among my peers, developing leader of our future, as well as a progressive scholar.

Essentially, I am trying to tie in multiple challenges, and how my persistence to beat the odds, has led me to a strong academic career in college and an influence to my peers.

I think with effective scholarly quotes and connection to Edison, it should develop to a rather strong essay.

Quick Question: Let’s say I want to explain what attending USC would mean to me, and what I could contribute to the university, should I put that in the “optional box”, or am I allowed to write an essay including that not based on any of 3 prompts given by USC?

Thanks,
Beau

thanks beau for writing my thesis for me…lol j/k, but i suggest you edit that out bc i’m sure SOMEONE will copy it. i didn’t do part 1 yet but i thought we just have to do one essay out of the three choices?

Haha, I already changed it. Never the less, Im not quite sure as to how many you are allowed to do??? I might call them and ask. I just don’t see why you would’nt be allowed to write more than one, but who knows.

Hello,

Seeking advice on transfering to SPPD. I have a 3.3 GPA will have about 70 credits when I finish at coastline community I havent taken any of the pre-reqs yet because those courses need more time than others, but all the GE’s are completed. I have a few C’s, but thats is due to taking courses overseas in Iraq. Does admissions just look at GPA, because I have more than a few EC’s. Really interested in this program, USC and the great ROTC program they have there.

why is the ‘courses and grades’ portion of the app inaccessible?

Is anyone going to the Transfer Fair on October 16th? I’m trying to reserve some spots but it won’t let me…i’ve tried use IE, Firefox, safari, and chrome but the site still doesn’t work on any of the browsers…argh…the drop down menu just keeps goign up and down when i click “reserve”
