USC 2010 Transfer Thread

lakerforever-- i had to apply by today (dec 1) for alumni scholarship consideration thats why i did it so early

Hi trojans!

Check out this thread (2009’s version of this thread): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/533874-usc-2009-transfer-thread.html</a></p>

And do a search for econ.

Also look at this thread, which shows some of the decisions on applicants from last year: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/704200-usc-transfer-decisions-2009-official-thread.html?highlight=usc+decision</a></p>

That second one might help you get an idea of the type of student that is admitted, though by no means should be considered the final word since it’s such a small pool of the applicants. There are a few Econ majors in that bunch.

USC really puts a lot of stock in the essays (at least, that’s the consensus) so put some effort into making them stellar!

Finally, after 30 units USC will not look at your high school record.

Did anybody sign up for the Transfer Day on January 22?

@dreamingUSC: I’ve already applied, but I think it wouldn’t hurt to experience the University one more time while I wait for my decision process. If you’re going, I’ll let you know in a few days.

Yes, I will be there. I’ve already attended a Transfer Session and Campus Tour, and I’m at USC every weekend (literally!), but I figured it would give me an excuse to spend more time at my dream school.

Anyone know when the supplemental application for Marshall is available?

Edit: Nevermind. I’m an idiot…

I am trying to transfer to SC from a little private university in Illinois. I’m really nervous because I really want to get in. The problem that I face here is that a lot of the teachers that I have are really young and they’re still trying to figure out how to teach. Most people in my classes are not doing too hot.

Anyways how do you think I compare:
-I have a 3.2,
-Im taking a class for every single class that they mentioned on the requirements,
-Ive started a general interest group for a national sorority,
-i have a minor in music,
-I am a part of the pep band,
-the fashion club,
-scrapbooking club.

i know that i am going to bring my gpa up to at least a 3.4 next semester and I already have tutors and professors looking at my essay. I’m a secretary for my school tutoring center along with a past job as an elementary school tutor, and I have 2 recs from past alumni. Do I have a chance?

What is your intended major?

premed track but i think im going to be going for womens studies

SCplzacceptme: I am applying for Premed as well (under Kinesiology). I think that if anything, Premed should be your first choice whereas Womens Studies should be your second. Thus, you will be considered for both: if they lack space for you within the first choice, then your second will be deliberated.

Wow thanks! I hadn’t actually thought about that. Sounds like a plan!

I love this site. Im so happy I found it before my App is due.

@tbibbs what is this alumni scholarship u r talking about? does everyone qualify (if we had submitted on time…)

o wait i googled it
[USC Alumni Association](http://alumni.usc.edu/students/scholarships.php)

damn i guess i screwed up that opportunity. i wish i knew about that. anything else i should know about!!?? im going to the transfer day on 22nd so iono these things!

Hey I’m applying for USC fall 2010 as well, haven’t read many of posts yet since there are so many, so who all is applying? any advice I’m trying to apply to be a sophomore next fall, I should have 40 credits and gpa currently is probably like a 3.7, any advice ppl?

Unfortunately I’m stumped for ideas on the essay. Btw, do you guys recommend a completely formal tone or a 90:10 ratio of formal to informal tone on the essay? I guess what I’m trying to ask is if the essay can have any informal qualities at all? I’m thinking my current attention-grabbing intro might be a little too informal for the admissions committee. ://

not totally sure mine is totally formal, like all of it.

Do all essays really have to be formal? I usually try to make it as informal as possible while still sounding “scholarly” I guess. I never really considered a ration but I’m guessing mine would be around 70/30 or a bit less; I always felt that an admissions committee would like reading an essay that was worded the same way as it’d be spoken, so thats usually what I shoot for. I always try to throw in a couple things to make them laugh to lighten it up.
Maybe that’s why I got rejected by so many colleges last year…?

Could be, a lot of school want the pure scholarly bs others want it to have personality like the people who sent it in, it really does differ with each committee. I have a book about admissions essay that got into harvard some are straight formal others are not, it really is hit and miss

@dreamingUSC: I’ve reserved my spot for the Transfer day on 01/22/09. PM at your leisure; maybe we can meet up. If anyone else is attending, I think it would be a good idea to take the transfer process head-on and start getting to know each other a little bit better if we are all prospective students.

if transferring as a junior, do i need to fulfill everything on that chart to be admitted?

Likeme: It all depends on whether or not the course is a transfer requirement or simply a graduation requirement. For example, in order to transfer, one must complete certain courses in Mathematics and English, among other classes (depending on the major). On the other hand, although one does not need to complete the Foreign Language requirement or General Education courses at their current institution, they will need to be completed at USC upon graduation. Thus, it is a good idea to begin enrolling in them, assuming they transfer over.

Also, I agree with SkylineisMine: I personally know few people at USC, so it’s best to start meeting them now (assuming I attain admission, of course)!
