USC 2010 Transfer Thread

So what are the chances of being accepted as a transfer student? I’m a double major right now in sociology and business.

I go to Emory now, and USC has been my dream school. I applied and didn’t get in but I got into Emory which is obviously a better school than USC. Anyway, Emory sucks/wasn’t what I am looking for or want in a school.

I’m looking at, for the end of this semester, probably a 3.8 GPA at Emory.

Also, how important are my:

1) College GPA vs HS GPA
2) Test scores
3) HS letters of recommendation vs college professor recommendation
4) HS involvement vs College involvement
5) Prestige of my current school (Emory)
HS stats:
GPA 3.75 UW from one of the best HS in the country
ACT: 33 (M - 35, R - 34, S - 32, W - 30)
I was extremely involved in a few activities that were a major part of my life outside of school (as I chose them to).

What are the chances of me getting into USC as a transfer?

If you have over 30 units completed they will not look at your high school GPA.

If you have over 30 units completed they will not look at your test scores.

They don’t ask for LORs, but some submit anyway. I don’t think we know for sure if they are looked at.

Again, depends on how many units, but I think we agree that college is more important.

I’m sure it won’t count against you!

Your GPA is competitive, but will you be looking to get into Marshall at USC?

@AMorrison: Been lurking for a while, but I think I can clear up the LORs confusion. While they’re not required, if you send them in they WILL look at them, it’s a question I asked during the Transfer Day session.

man, i’m not close enough to any of my profs to get good LORs. i can ask and they’d be willing to do it but they don’t know me well so the letter wouldn’t sing my praises DAMN IT

@ashton Interesting! I wonder how much it counts for/against you? Maybe I’ll send one in, I guess it can’t hurt?

Any one have any advice for making your application look stronger?

@xoxocc
you shouldn’t even worry about it. You have a really strong app

@AMorrison, yes. I want to go to Marshall. They won’t look at my test scores at all? I feel like that is a significant part of my application.

How strongly is where I am coming from weighted? I just read the 2009 thread and looked through all the Marshall acceptances. The average GPA was about 3.85, but they all came from – and excuse me for saying this – ****-hole schools or community “colleges.” Does it even matter that I’m coming from a school that is ranked 9 spots higher, and more academically prestigious? I feel as though my GPA can’t be compared to someone who is coming from a CC. Not really the same thing. At all.

Also, can recommendations be from HS and college or just college? Does the over 30 credit rule apply to this again? What about in regard to ECs?

XoXoCC - Yes, they will consider the fact that you’re coming from Emory. Just try to not come off so proud of yourself in your application. If you feel the need to express your disrespect for community colleges, I suggest you do it somewhere else.

XoXoCC: They will hardly look at the context of the institution that you currently study at. According to an admissions counselor, each student is considered as an equal to their fellow applicants- no school is given priority. Oh, and excuse me for saying this: although I can see where you are coming from (in that I am neither a CC student nor one who performed poorly in HS- I had a 3.5 UW with an ACT composite of a 32), I deem your comment as rather condescending to many of the people on the thread. Moreover, you evidently are not as amazing as you believe yourself to be, as you did not obtain admission the first time around, like the rest of us.

Hello, I’m currently a freshman journalism major at Pepperdine. I’m considering a transfer to USC because the rigor of Pepperdine’s journalism program doesn’t seem comparable.

I’m projecting a 3.5-3.7 by the end of this year with a 4.0 in major classes. I’ll have 48 units at the end of this academic year, including AP credits.

College EC:
-News Assistant and Student Government Association reporter for the newspaper first semester. (about 15 clips)

-Life and Arts Assistant Editor second semester

-Award for top freshman journalism student

-Attended associate collegiate press convention

-E-board for Middle Eastern Peace and Awareness club

-A couple other justice orgs, college dems, catholic student association

-Bible study leader

-Community service projects

-Two internships- one with a national newspaper and another with a prominent indie publishing company

High School:
-3.7 GPA, 4.0/4.55 senior year

EC:
-Advanced choir: 4 years, VP (11), music librarian (12), leadership award (11), varsity letter (10, 11)

-Journalism: 1 year (12), Editor, Business Manager, Jr. Copy Editor, Photo of the Issue Award, Editor of the Issue Award.

-FBLA: 2 years (11-12), Fund-raising Committee Head (11), leadership award (11)

-Lit Mag: 1 year (12)

-PTA Reflections Competitor: 1st Place in District- Literature (11), 3rd place school-wide- Visual Arts (10)

-Private voice lessons: 4 years

-Volunteered with junior high choir program for two summers (10, 11)

-Journalism scholarship

What do you think? I could use any feedback.

Yeah there is definitely no need to be patronizingly haughty like that, XoXoCC. Although, us community college students shouldn’t take offense to those comments because where we are isn’t who we are. I know from reading several posts on different threads that transfer students at USC are the ones more involved in school activities and take more advantage of the opportunities available.

@gwu_girl - Your stats look awesome! Focus on keeping your GPA high and doing as best you can on the essay questions on the application.

@XoXoCC - We really don’t need that kind of judgmental attitude in this thread.

is anyone applying under an obscure major – one they believe isn’t too competitive – or is it just me?

@AMorrison - Thank you so much! I won’t have any trouble writing the essay as soon as I choose the topic  I’m thinking about how my Middle Eastern background inspired me to pursue journalism/be a strong proponent of objective journalism and my internship with a nonprofit Arab-American newspaper as a topic, but I’m not sure.

@ernily: I was actually wondering the same thing! I’m applying as a narrative studies major (they just introduced it last spring). I’m very curious if that means my chances of getting in are higher. What’s your major?

I’m new here, by the way! Although I’ve been lurking for the past several months, haha. You are all extremely helpful. :)

@gwu_girl you have fairly impressive stats and an excellent extra curricular, but keep in mind that your high school stats do not matter if you have 30 or more credits (which you do), so rely more on your college resume rather than your high school. Although the high school curriculars can some what help, they are still considered to be part of the past and admissions counselors stress more on the now, specially if you’re currently a second year. Just giving you a heads up, but you should be fine with what you have!

hey guys! just thought id send a post out. i used to read these things like everyday when i applied this past year. i was so super nervous and looked at everyones statistics to see what my chances were! haha. but anyway. hope you guys do good, and keep a good spirit. I never thought i would get in, but i did, and i was completley shocked. Just remember they want really well rounded people, i saw on other threads that some people who didnt get accepted like volunteered in africa and went to private school and had like a 4.3GPA in highschool, but to USC they just see sorry to say this butt kissers just be yourself, and make it fun. Definantly work on ur Essays and Short Answers, and show alot of personality in your essays and short answers. I wrote mine on volleyball and how it taught me discipline, but still remember to show some intelligence, as GPAs go. Dont stress TOO much on ur GPA i mean, they say average 3.7 but that means for every 4.0GPA person they let in…they let in someone alot lower…like 3.3. I got into my major neuroscience and i had a 3.54 so, just really work hard on your essay and your grades at your currrent school! FIGHT ON!

PS: if you guys have any other questions id be glad to answer them!

@xdzzzrawr - Yeah, I know high school won’t be counted, I just included it because I noticed some people here asking. I’m actually a freshman this year. Do you think what I have is sufficient for one semester’s worth of college?
