@gwu_girl yea most definitely, your resume as a first semester freshman seem outstanding and seems to greatly show your fervor for your major (journalism), just make sure you hit your marks on your grades and stay on top of that GPA. I don’t know the pre-reqs for your journalism major, but make sure you get all As if there are any pre-reqs as admissions counselors stress on As and A-s in those classes.

Also I read wrong on your post, I thought you had already accumulated 48 credits, so I assumed you weren’t a freshman, my fault. But if you’re pretty sure that you’ll hit past that 30 unit mark by the end of this year then the counselors will look at only your college GPA, so make sure that college GPA is nice and shiny. Make sure that by the time you apply, your grades are respectable in the 3.75ish range so that you can avoid getting a spring grade request(SGR) because many freshman applicants for transferring often get this because the counselors do not really know if you can stay strong and be consistent, but if you show them early on that you’re studious, you wont have more pressure on you later to get that GPA higher in the spring.

I apologize for the elitist tone of the comment but it is rather frustrating to be expected to get almost a 4.0 at Emory when it is actually harder than community colleges. I am more concerned with that being acknowledged than the prestige of my school.

What is the context of the over 30 credit rule? Is it when I apply (after this semester) or what I will have accumulated once I finish this year? I will have 30 credits when I apply, I think. How strict is this rule?

Actually, there is a reason I did not get into USC that explains why I was not accepted at NYU Stern either, and I was accepted at Emory. But I understand we are all in the same boat.

XoXoCc…
why were u not accepted to either if u dont mind sharing? i understand where ur coming from even though im at a JC right now. but i could have gone to other prestigious schools but sc is right for me and i wouldnt have wanted to go anywhere else

I got accepted Last Year for Music Industry.

i don’t go here often but send me a PM and I’ll get back to you with any questions (mainly Music Industry kids). gotta help the future trojans out! :)

My school’s way of calculating GPA (grading scale and weighting system (or lack thereof)) is extremely unfair/much more difficult than almost all other school’s. Plus the rigor of my classes allowed me to only take 2 APs a year which looks awful. My GPA would have been .3-.5 higher if I had simply applied my percentages to a standard grading scale. My school also, after doing this, failed to mention that our grading scale was like this so unless some time was spent looking at my actual grades and knowing my high school then it was going to hurt me greatly. We were told not to say anything on the common application because the school was supposed to tell the colleges on our school profile sheet but they forgot to.

Emory took that into consideration as I understand while NYU (who doesn’t even have enough time to tell me if I got all my application materials in) or USC did not. I would say if my GPA was a 3.9 UW and 4.3W with a 33 ACT I might have had a better chance of getting in the first time. So, yeah. >.<

Not to be rude for anything, while its great u did all that good stuff in highschool, they dont care. they want to see what you have been doing on college and YOUR COLLEGE GRADES. really. they dont care at all. i did bad. probably worse then all of you guys and i got in because i did wonderful in college. focus on college. not APS and highschool GPAs

ok good! and really work extra extra hard on the Essay and the short answers, and be really outgoing but show your smart side too. they want a really well rounded person. also do the "know a little more about your self " section its fun and it also makes you look not just like every other applicant!

Hey I got a quick question regarding transcripts. Do we personally send them or do we need to have our HS and University send them? I downloaded that fax form and stuff, I was just not sure whether or not I’m the one that is going to send them.

They need to be sent through the school through an “Official” means of delivery. This would include being sealed and sent directly through the school.

Go to your school’s office of records/registrar/etc. and hand them the completed forms with your basic information. They will then mail the records to USC according to the form.

@xdzzzrawr - Thanks for the advice. I’m looking at a 3.55 this semester, which is basically due to being in the newsroom until 3 a.m. three nights of the week working on the paper. I hope that will be considered/noticed?

I’m curious as to what type of classes you guys are all taking. I don’t have nearly that high of a GPA because I’m attempting to transfer from Computer Science at UIUC. All the classes I’ve taken at UIUC have been technical classes related to my major except for maybe 1-2 courses. I took all my other gen-eds at my local community college. I’m sure they’ll consider that when they look at the application, it just worries me because my UIUC gpa will be around a 3.3 cumulative and my CC one will be around a 3.8.

is anyone else having trouble accessing the essay/short answer prompts? every time i go to the USConnect, all of my boxes say that internet explorer can’t display the webpage. if anyone could pm these topics to me i would greatly appreciate it!!

@dreamer_ I had the same issue. Before you login there should be a link on the page that says “Mac users, click here”. Click on that link even if you’re on a PC and it will send you to the old version of the site. It has all the same information, it just isn’t the new USConnect.

@gwu_girl no problem at all! I believe that there is a section in the end of the application where you can explain to them anything that the app could not help explain, such as family problems as a result of Ws in a certain semester, or work was overwhelming but you learned alot, stuff like that, they will most definitely take that into consideration. USC to my surprise understands their applicants much better than say UCs because they are a private institution. So just make sure you indicate that you were fulfilling your passion for journalism and that you’ve grown so much from it etc. - but others should be cautious as this section is not meant to explain why you didn’t study well and perform at a decent GPA, say 3.5 or above - you should have a decent balance of both if you have a good excuse of why your GPA for one semester wasn’t as great.
hope that helps!
