I go to a small CC in Florida and I am applying to USC for Fall 2010. I am currently finishing up my essays to send in before the transfer deadline and I have a question. The admissions rep for my area does not return phone calls so here it goes.

The USC website says to calculate your GPA based on courses that will transfer. What if they accept or deny a course I didn’t expect? The class names at my school are all very different >.<

@tjacob - Generally all coursework is transferable unless it is remedial coursework (aka english/math classes below the college level such as english 95 or something) or courses that you can not take at USC such as hospitality management or other subjects/majors that USC does not offer.

If the class does not transfer into an equivilent at usc, it will generally transfer as elective credit.

So for example when calculating my cumulative gpa for the application, I included the gpa of all my college courses except the 1 remedial math course I took the very first semester.

Kulakai: OK yes that makes sense! because I was not sure what major I wanted to study until last semester, so I basically took courses that did not satisfy Annenberg requirements therefore I will end up with 74. But it’s good to know having over 74 does not lower my chances for admissions. Thanks!

johnny_boi: Yes I will complete 74 units in the end of spring because my first two smesters I took courses for biochem. major but I realized communications was my interest. Therefore, I had to take classes that will fulfill Annenberg requirements. i took 25 units fall semester and will take 28 units spring semester.

****Does Annenberg require another personal statement for Communications major?

Does anyone know how USC views CHSPE (california high school proficiency exam) recipients. im starting at a CCC in the spring but i never had a junior/senior year in HS. how would this look?

I just found out that a science lab I took last semester doesn’t fulfill the GE category III but it DID fulfill category III during the summer semester before. So frustrating.

@armolina - I’m in exactly the same boat, I took it after my sophomore year. It is my understanding that you are OK as long as you’ve completed up to Intermediate Algebra in Math (I took a non-transferable math class last year to do that) and fulfilled the English requirement (WRIT 130 equivalent, usually English 1B or something at the CC).

The other thing to remember is that after you take 30 units at a CC your high school record isn’t looked at by USC.

My mother works at USC medical, wondering if that’ll help me out…as she really wants me to get in as she was told if I do USC pays for my tuition.

After 55 units and a 3.53 GPA, anyone think I have a good shot at a Spring Grade Request? Grades came out and I’m kinda nervous now, I DO NOT WANT TO GET REJECTED AGAIN! lol

I’d say if you’re GPA is somewhat low compared to the average GPA of accepted transfers for your major then you will probably get an SGR. What’s the average GPA for SPPD?

@jhsocal, are you applying to communication or journalism???

@socal4, a few pages back you asked about a letter of intent for the communication major. The letter of intent is only required for Journalism and Public Relations.
