USC 2010 Transfer Thread

Thanks a lot Kulakai!
I applied to marshall too.

Submitted finally!

Do you know when to update the spring grades for USC addmission?

Do we have to physically mail our forms + transcripts or can we fax them?

@noodlesli - If they want to see your spring grades before making a decision on your application then they will mail you a “Spring grade request” which you’ll see people refer to as an SGR on here. Otherwise just send an official transcript once your semester is over and spring grades are posted at your school.

@quentin13 - You can do either. They provide fax cover sheets in the online application site.

Did any of you guys go over on your essay? I’m finishing mines up and it looks like I’m going to be way over. I need to cut it down but do you think it would be ok to go to 750 instead of 700 words?

@Skyline They said about a page, so that was the criteria I followed, the website also says they will read all essays in their entirety but that they have found the successful applicants can express themselves in a page. I don’t think 50 words will be that bad. I myself submitted at 710. As long as you think that the essay is strong start to finish, as well as meaningful all the way through, I don’t think it’ll work against you.

@skyline12 - I was at 750 on my first draft as well. I had several other helpful people read through it and make suggestions on what parts were strong and what parts were not. I then rewrote many of the sections in a more concise manner and got it down to 680 while it still maintained the same message.

Quick question, is it a good sign if you get a spring grades request in a couple of months? or does it mean nothing??

I’m almost positive my essay it too long but I’m finding it difficult to cut out portions at all.
After a lengthy divorce between my parents me and my family were homeless for 8 months. In junior year I thought up a foundation to train the homeless and get them jobs at local businesses. The program’s first run succeeded in my senior year so I decided to not apply to any colleges and I’ve been running and promoting non profit work for the last 3 years. I started going to college last year at 21, I’ve completed 27 units and have 17 more in spring, I have a 4.0 GPA and want to become a civil rights lawyer while continuing my non profit work. So I explained the divorce, the homelessness, the road that I took to create the proposal and make the foundation a reality, what I’ve done over the last 4 years to promote and develop it and why I want to go back to school.

How can I cut anything out? Not to mention I’m a pretty wordy person but I’ve been as efficient as possible so far.

Any suggestions?

Hey, I applied for the screen writing program for the school of cinematic arts. The application deadline was december 1st and I looked at my profile on my usc admission profile but it says that they haven’t received my application with the essays and letter of recommendations. I emailed them about it and they told me over a month ago to email them back if it hasn’t updated within 3 weeks. If it didn’t update that means that I would have to resend everything. I did so 3 weeks later when it didn’t update and they told me they haven’t imputed anything yet and it will be awhile.

Is anyone else having problems with them not “updating” the required documents? I’m getting nervous that they lost my application…

@rcwhite - There are several reasons you might get an SGR during the admissions process. These two below come to mind.

You are a transfer student with a smaller amount of credits completed and they want to make sure you kept your GPA at a certain level before rendering an admission decision. This is common for those with GPA’s on the low end or on the median or those that are trying to transfer after freshman year.

You are currently completing one of the pre-requisites for transfer and they want to make sure you completed the course prior to them rendering a decision. For example I am a Marshall transfer and I am completing Calc I this semester which is a requirement for transfer consideration so I fully expect an SGR even though I have a high gpa and plenty of credits completed otherwise.

Well you are quite right haha.
I am a freshman trying to transfer to be a sophomore, I have completed 22 units and have a 4.0, I am taking 18 more units for the spring semester.
I am applying as undecided but ultimately want to transfer into Marshall I will have all the pre-requisites completed except for Calc I next semester.
So should I expect a SGR and would that be good or mean nothing? Could I be rejected right of the bat and them not care about my spring grades?

Just submitted the app.

FINALLY!!!

@rcwhite If you get an SGR it doesn’t mean it’s bad or good, but could be used as a way for the admissions to know whether or not you’ve been KEEPING your trend and see if you’re able to maintain a 4.0 or a relatively high GPA even when taking 18 units during the spring. In my opinion if you get one, it’s just them trying to see if you truly live up to their expectations of a model student or transfer, also a spring grade request may also mean that you may already be qualified for spring term next year since you’ll be a sophomore and by then hopefully you won’t be undecided and are certain you want to be in Marshall and that they want to see your grades to see if you qualify for fall. Again there are many factors to see what they are deciding, you may get one because so many transfers qualify and have raised the standards (this is has been prevalent over the years and is why the average GPA of transfers is higher than the year before) so they want to make sure you’re at the top of their acceptance pool.

Sorry for being verbose, but these are just some things you can consider if why you are getting a SGR and it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad.

^okay thanks so much! Very helpful, I appreciate it.

I got a SGR last year with a 3.8 and ended up getting rejected. I had to drop my required college algebra because I was hospitalized from a bad motorcycle wreck. :/

Hopefully this year will turn out better considering I maintained my GPA while accumulating more credits.

do we all have to submit our FAFSA form whether you want any financial aid or not?

Quick question, is the app due on Monday night?

@molemann - On every other application/Financial aid form deadline date, it is usually midnight. So that means due by midnight on the 1st but it is never good to wait until the last minute because that is just asking for something to happen like your internet connection disconnecting for some reason:P
