USC 2010 Transfer Thread

jws1188: I believe only the application itself is due by the 1st and the supplemental stuff is due soon, as in they want you to mail it to them sooner rather than later…

…as far as that mail having a postmark date of Feb 1st, im not sure, hopefully someone here knows cause i’m in the same boat.

The faxing in part is confusing me. It is asking me to attach my HS and College Transcripts but I don’t actually have them in my hand. The two colleges I have attended have already mailed out my transcripts. Do I just complete as much as I can and fax in the papers I was given?

Application submitted! Can’t believe February 1st has finally come. Good luck to everyone except for those who are applying to Annenberg :P

@yjpark0226 The courses section doesnt show up because we are transfer students. You go to application home (by clicking the middle save button) and its the sentence in the middle of the screen that says something like “submit application now”… search the page for submit until you find it!

@people posting above

1.)The application(part II online) must be postmarked by Feb 1st or submitted online prior to midnight on Feb first. Your additional documents(transcripts/letters of rec) are not due by the 1st however you need to mail them in ASAP!

2.)You do not need to fax in those forms if you already had your college/high school mail official transcripts to USC admissions. The forms are meant for people faxing in the documents themselves. You should receive confirmation via email/mail when they’ve received your mailed transcipts and processed them into your application at their admissions office.

@jsw1188 - As you haven’t posted again we can assume you found the submit button. I can post a screenshot of the area where you submit online if you still haven’t found it but it is hard to miss if you tried looking around the section where you access part II.

so heres a question, i only have a 3.0 because of a dismal schedule and walking on to a varsity sport (the time commitment there), im currently bringing this way up but those grade wont be sent till may 10thish. my high school gpa was 3.8 UW, but i didnt get in with that when i applied as a freshman. i have an absurd amount of ectracurriculars in both HS and college, and i think my essays are vastly improved from my essays when i applied as a freshman, but i cant decide if its worth hitting send and dropping the cash with a 3.0. any thoughts?

@nharmon91 This definitely depends on your major… what are you applying as?

im applying to CLAS and right now i have it as first choice undecided but im an econ major at my current univ. and have that as my second choice. i might switch it to first choice econ and second choice bio however. your post makes it sounds like this would make a difference, any insight?

There are people (me) applying with much worse overall stats than that, so go for it. I never understand how people with good stats have such little self confidence!

hey guys just still confused a bit with a few questions.

Stats

-Sophmore transfer with 18 units completed, and 19 upcoming in the spring semester with a 4.0 at a CCC

-Biology Major

First question, I WILL NOT have the english requirement done ( english 102 or writ 130 (or w/e it is), I explained this in my application. basically I was unable to get an english class during fall semester due to budget cuts and limit in classes at community college. I explained to them that I will be taking English 101 during spring semester and English 102 during the summer intersession. The reason i’m confused is when I called them they said they only checked up to spring semester, however, I also sent them a detailed email and they stated that I can still apply for consideration. I’m really scared that I will be auto-rejected because of this.

2 Question. I’ve never written a college application essay before and don’t know how that judge this. Basically, I wrote my essay the same day I sent in my application. My essay was incredibly well written, original, and vivid, however, I forgot to correct stupid mistakes like accidentally writing "upmost instead of “utmost”. I also forgot an “and” in my short response paragraphs. Do you think the adcoms will pay a grand amount of attention to this? Even if my essay was great?

Thanks guys :]

Do we receive the decision letters around june?

@nabilesmail

1 Answer: (Although there was no question in there that I could find) Adcom’s do not auto reject anyone - well maybe some people, but not for a course deficiency. Hopefully you included this information in your optional short answer? They will look down on this, as it is definitely important, but I wouldn’t say that they will rule you out immediately.

2 Answer: Unfortunately, yes. Not because they are looking at these errors to judge your intelligence, but because they will be looking at them to see how much effort you put in. If you put in a lot of effort (no basic mistakes) they are more likely to believe that you care a lot. If not, they might think you don’t care enough, and would carry this attitude onto your university studies. That being said, if its a damn good essay, it shouldn’t hurt you too much because some people are simply not that good at proof-reading and things get by them, but its not because of a lack of caring. But again, if there are a lot of these minor errors, I do think the adcom would keep it in the back of their mind while deciding.

@.tron. Supposedly, yes they say that they mail them by June 1st, but there have been many cases of people not getting anything until a week into June Or you receive a SGR and then don’t find out for many more weeks.

I hate to say this, but I do believe that they put much emphasis on completing the writing requirement by Spring and will not accept a student if they have not done so.
In regards to your small grammatical errors, I have been told by admissions officers from various schools that simple errors show a lack of attention and could send the message to readers that the applicant is not serious. Despite this, it really depends on your specific officer: certain mistakes can be personally bothersome for certain people.

@nharmon91 The average GPA for transfer students in 2009 was 3.66. But this is average so (without getting too precise with statistics) this means that half the people are below this! If you managed to convey how the reasons you listed impact your GPA, it would definitely be beneficial. That being said, neither of those majors are ridiculously hard or ridiculously easy, so I don’t think you are a lock either way. As purplenurple said, many many people have worse stats.

i noticed a trend in the 2009 transfer thread that was the lower amount of units u have, the sooner you get your admission decision.

is this true?

Since ill only be taking 1 more GE to finish my GE’s and major prereqs at USC (i think…), does that mean im a junior after i take that one class? so i would be …transferring as a junior or a really really late sophomore

Just submitted my application and I remember from last year when I submitted my app as a freshmen, that USC had a website for application updates/status? Is there a site similar for this year?

@sky-raptor - i think when your on usconnect, when you go to your undergraduate application again. on the very bottom of the page it says Application Status.

Mine says

The University of Southern California is pleased to offer the ability of students to receive online messages regarding the status of their application. However, all decision notifications are made via postal mail.

Undergraduate Application (Part II, Fall 2010)
We have received your application, and we need more information. Please ensure you have submitted all required items. Due to the high volume of application documents we receive, allow sufficient processing time.

I personally handed in all my documents and have the receipts…guess it needs time.

@Dainese The number of GEs or prereqs completed doesn’t influence your class. The only factor is the number of transferable semester units you have completed (or will have completed by time of transfer). Find this out, and you’ll have your answer.

That being said, how reliable is this trend you found?

not very reliable haha, just my own observation from the 2009 transfer thread

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/716193-usc-admitted-transfer-students-2009-a.html?highlight=usc

So, I was just looking at my application today and realized I didn’t include my GPA and unit count on the profile information.

Who should I email about this? Or does it really even matter considering they will have a copy of my transcript?
