USC Animation and Digital Arts Portfolio: URGENT Dec 1st deadline!

Hello all! I am writing this as a sort of last-minute request regarding the requirements of USC’s Cinematic Arts Animation and Digital Arts Portfolio on SlideRoom.

Other majors within the Cinematic Arts state that they require writing samples and photography, with a strong story-telling inclusion, but my SlideRoom for the Animation department states that I merely need to submit 12-15 pieces of work, whether writing or visual. I have all of my artwork uploaded and titled, but I’m not sure if I should add anything to the Additional Explanation or not, especially with USC’s website redirecting me to the other Cinematic Arts majors pages when I click the link for Application Requirements.

Can anyone tell me if I need to add anything to my 12-15 pieces of artwork on SlideRoom?

Thank you so much, and have a lovely day.

@Aceris WWWard is in EST time zone so you will probably see something later this morning/today.

My daughter did not apply for Animation and Digital Arts. Her application was for Film and Television Production. In her case, she did add an explanation or further info in the section allowing for it next to her visual (short film) upload. I guess that you will need to decide whether your pieces of artwork are better served “as is” or whether they might benefit from some explanation that provides greater context or clarity. In your case… if you choose to say anything extra… you may want to keep it very brief, maybe only detailing its title and for what purpose it was originally created. I would not necessarily recommend fully explaining the why or how or what you were trying to convey. To me at least, that would seem to defeat the purpose of artistic expression. It is up to each individual viewer to foster their own reaction and feelings.

Good Luck

@WWWard Thank you very much for your advice. I didn’t get a chance to reply earlier but it was very helpful! I ended up just listing the materials used and the month/year completed, especially since they said 12-15 pieces would be roughly 15 minutes of a presentation, and that is the limit, so adding lots of descriptive info may not have been a good choice.

Good luck to your daughter if she’s applying to USC 2022, or if she’s already been accepted/attending USC, I hope all is well!

You’re welcome. Both of my daughters are currently at USC now… a senior and a freshman. Good luck with your goal of joining them there
