USC Class of 2018 Applicants Thread

I am certain that the notation on the financial aid page was not meant to reveal anything but, like madbean, I have been around here long enough to recognize a “whoops” when I see it. That two of our posters had a 2nd choice major and/or undecided listed lends a specificity to the accidental posting that would not be there had only 1st choice majors appeared across the board.

I continue to state strongly however, that financial aid does NOT update all at once in the way admissions does, so an “unknown/unknown” could have later changed to a major/class - in other words don’t give up hope. Decision day is a very tough time, but you are all wonderful candidates who will find amazing opportunities regardless of any one decision letter.

Best of luck to all.

(P.S. I noted early on this thread that the hole would be plugged as soon as someone alerted USC and/or USC peeked in on this thread - they definitely check in on cc on occasion.)

what if you did not apply for financial aid?

I believe that the consensus is that anything reflected online at the FA portal, past or present, is far from definitive, especially since they have not finalized all applicants’ packets to date. There are a # of threads related to various colleges across CC wherein people are trying to decipher messages via FA portals… but I doubt that any of them are definitive. Traditionally, FA offices work independently of Admissions and should not be looked to as a sign one way or the other related to acceptance status.

The Open House Invitations though sent out by USC SDA do seem to be a rather significant indicator that an acceptance is pending… at least historical evidence seems to point to such. Thankfully though, we will all know for sure in just 4 days…

Chubscout, USC has now plugged the hole where some applicants were able to see their major/class listed on their financial aid page. Yes, one poster who did not apply for financial aid reported that they were able to see major/class on that page. All applicants will now see “unknown/unknown” as USC was alerted to their mistake and corrected the error.

so if a few days ago under my FA tab I saw Major: unknown Class: unknown and it is now gone is that just part of USC fixing the glitch. Like maybe the took it down so that they could input everyone’s decisions into the system or would that be the first sign of a denial?

Actually, the headings and fields are just gone. Nothing says ‘unknown’ or anything else - just what was there a few weeks ago - your name and id. Good luck to everyone. Hoping to end the admit cycle on a positive note after two rejections last week (ucsd and ucla).

So I shouldn’t overreact that the class and major headings are gone now then?

I do not believe it was an indicator of a denial, it was a hint at acceptance (and it is possible that some of those showing “unknown/unknown” may have later changed to “major/class” had the fields not been deleted). It was taken down because via email and Twitter questions USC was alerted that they had accidentally provided a hint about acceptances and so they deleted the fields.

The class and major headings are gone for everyone now so a reaction is not warranted.

Ok thanks!

As a computer programmer, I would think

(1) USC won’t manually populate these fields (class and major) for each applicant. They must come from admission database.
(2) After they found out that glitch, they just asked IT to change the filed permission to private/restricted or something that we won’t see it anymore.

I never got an invitation to the open house… Is this a bad sign?
also, is psychology at USC an impacted major? how hard is it to get in compared to the other majors?
USC has now become my top choice since I got rejected from UCLA last week… Hoping for the best!

The open house invitation was from the School of Dramatic Arts - is that the school to which you applied? Your posts suggest undecided (Dornsife) or Psychology (Dornsife), in which case the open house would not apply to you and in which case the lack of an invitation would not be a sign of any kind.

Good luck!

@alamemom
Okay I thought the invitation was for all applicants, so yay!
Does anyone know how difficult the Psych major is to get accepted into at USC?

Does anyone know if USC accepts with regard to major within Dornsife or does everyone applying to Dornsife have an equal chance?

@cantooo I’m pretty sure it’s by major. For admission, USC begins by reviewing your first choice major. If they (the school that has this major) don’t want to admit you for that, then you’ll be considered for your second choice major. If they feel that you aren’t suitable for either of these majors, then there is a possibility you could be admitted as undecided.

When would the letters come? Before March 29th?

@FerrisBueIler2 depends on where you live! Letters are sent out tomorrow, so if you live in the southern california area, you’ll probably get the letter a day later.

what about international applicants? can we get a letter before the 29th?

question, what are the possible scholarship outcomes with this week’s decision? i know that major scholarships were already considered for people who submitted by dec 1 back in jan/feb, but is it possible to still receive merit scholarships, or is everything just need based at this point?

Did anyone else just lose their admissions status check box under the admissions tab?
