USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

@sonsav Thanks re: RHP! That’s quite the leap but I know some can and want to do it.

150 kids apply every year to USC from my son’s school (LA county - south bay). About 45+ get accepted. I have not received a text from son that anyone he knows got an offer today. We have a tiny post office so that does not suprise me. Usually the acceptences spread like wildfire - especially for SC since we have so many SCions. Fingers crossed. Also, someone mentioned that SC does not accept 90% of SCions. Not sure that is accurate if you consider the Trojan transfer program. Most SCions are offered that program because the hield is so incredibly high. The Trojan Family is true and holds weight for sure. Best of luck to all. Fight On!

how do you know that Deans are only awarded in March?

do scholarship rejects still get a letter saying they are no longer considered for merit?

@socalmomof2boys

That was referring only to first-year admissions… and not transfers or TTP, etc.

Per USC Admissions… SCions currently represent about 20 percent of the freshman class or around 600 of 3000. But… more than 10,000 SCion applications are received each year. This year, they will likely admit 7300-7400 in total, out of the 64K+ applying. USC could thus fill its entire freshman class more than three times over with just legacy applicants. All 7300-7400 admitted this year could be so. But instead, they only end up admitting around 1000 and then around 600 of those will likely enroll, based on recent trends.

But as you suggest, many more get offered TTP and transfer in later.

@dstepler Post earlier today… change this year, per someone who works in admissions.

@s0meUSCkid95 Thank you… Do you mean that RHP kids are offered the Trustee/ Presidential in January and not some other time? I wasn’t sure if they follow the same timeline as everyone else in regards to scholarship.

@blueblast No, i do not believe that letters are sent letting you know you’re not being considered for scholarship. But I think in the portal everyone is advised that you’ll hear in March.

Just out of curiosity I’m asking, I went inside my D’s portal, all the fonts are looking bigger than usual (we didn’t change any settings). Does it happen to yours too?

@Suave123 my font is bigger too

ye bigger font

it’s happening for me as well

When the portal updates… likely Saturday morning at or around midnight pacific time… it will include the posting of a letter to your portal saying that while you will not be continuing via the merit process, you will still be considered for admission in March.

What I mean is that transfer is for freshman applicants accepted in march as a senior in HS and start second semester at SC or as a sophmore. The kids go to USC Paris or Rome then to USC in LA. They are not considered transfer students. 40 out of 45 applicants last year were admitted this way and 100 percent of SCions. It is the nee normal for legacy kids in SoCal.

As a Trojan myself, I don’t know one SCion that recieived a scholarship. I am hoping my son will be the first. So many are qualified and the chances are less than Harvard. My son got into Minerva - Keck Graduate Institute (not a graduate school - has 2 percent acceptance) so I am thinking positive thought.

Also, thanks for all the info. You seem spot on

@WWWard ny bad. I see younwrote about TTP. Sorry.

Is it likely that there are no more packages for SoCal students?

@WWWard but the letter you refer to is not technically correct anymore. It should not say that you will NOT be continuing in the merit process because as stated by the “insider” Dean’s will come out in March.

@hcmom65 Correct. They will need to change the language of their letter. I was also just paraphrasing. @CADREAMIN posted it’s prior language exactly somewhere on this thread.

@WWWard My niece applied so when you refer to the portal updating, does it update not only advising that they’re no longer in the running for scholarship but, in the event the white box hasn’t arrived, is the portal also updated to inform applicants that they were accepted and offered a scholarship?

@barbpz Yes… It will update one of two ways… either 1) congrats! here are all of the new links and steps, etc… with a copy of the letter in the white box. Or… 2) it will update to reflect that while you are not getting a scholarship offer now you are still in the running for admission in March.

Often, people find out about their admission, either in Jan or March, via the portal update. Those pesky boxes often get delayed… unfortunately. And international applicants often learn online first.

In March of 2017, my daughter’s box arrived in 4 days versus 2 and after her portal update.

@hcmom65 The “merit process” is considered those that are interviewing for the 1/2 and up (which can be dropped down as well). Some Dean’s have always come out in March, sometimes many, sometimes very few. @s0meusckid95 said Deans aren’t included in this round; this would be the first year that they aren’t giving any Dean’s in January. Dean’s were always confusing in this round because people get the white box with the letter but no info on a scholarship, then they posted here or wherever (or call admissions) where they learn no info on a scholarship in their January packet means Deans 1/4.

The letter that gets posted this weekend will read like this (number may vary obviously):

Dear ________

I am writing to first-year candidates who submitted their applications by December 1, in time for consideration for USC merit scholarships. I want to update you on the status of our admission review, and our scholarship selection process.

Scholarship Selection
Over 38,000 students applied in time to be considered for merit scholarships. We have offered admission to approximately 1,200 students who will proceed to the next phase of consideration for our top awards: the Mork Family, Stamps Leadership, Trustee, and Presidential scholarships. I am sorry to say you were not selected for further consideration for these awards.
This notification only applies to the scholarships I mentioned. You will still be considered for other awards, including but not limited to those listed on our Scholarships page. I encourage you to apply for financial aid if you have not already done so. Visit the Financial Aid website for application instructions. Also, if you are admitted, named a National Merit Finalist and select USC as your first-choice institution, you will receive a USC Presidential Scholarship worth one-half tuition.

Admission Selection and Notification
Your application is still being considered for admission. We are planning to offer admission to approximately 7,800 additional first-year students. We will mail these notifications so you have the decision by April 1. I am grateful for your patience as you wait for us to finish this difficult work.

Mid-Year Reports
If you or your school counselor has not already done so, please submit your mid-year report: your final grades from the first term of your senior year. You can report them online at you.usc.edu, or your school can send them to us.
