USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

thank you

@WWWard @thstud517 thank you

^^^ youā€™re welcome

Just a suggestion from someone that has been through this (several times) and of course you can make your own plan here, but if it works, please let your student get the package - and have their moment. (Parent hint - take a peek if you must and just leave it in there.) Some kids want a text from mom after the mail comes, but if you can wait it out - that mailbox moment is worth it. It is why USC goes through all this trouble and time to do it this way. It is a once in a lifetime event for them that they will remember forever. Sending them a text in the middle of class is gonna blah-zen (to make boring) what should be a spectacular moment in their lives - and you wonā€™t share in it. So give it some thought while there is still time about a good way for it to play out. (To peek or not to peek, that is the question.)

One of the best parent moments I ever had was when I picked up my son from high schooland we stopped at the bottom of the driveway for him to get out and get the mail (we are rural so we drive by our mailbox on way to house). Because I was on CC, I knew there was a possibility something was there, so I made sure he got out to get the mail (something he always did). Luckily, he was oblivious as he didnā€™t follow CC or anything. I still remember him lowing the lid of the mailbox as usual, then reaching in to grab the mail - I still see his face and this whole process in slow motion in my mindā€¦ him looking inside as usual but taking a bit longer as something caught his eye, then slowly looking back at me - first with this look of confusion - then lowering his head to get a better look inside - and reaching in and pulling out the beautiful package. When it really sunk in he raised up his head and looked over at me again with that ā€œwhat and OMG!!!ā€ ā€” like a kid on Christmas morning that just got a puppy. No video camera needed for this moment, itā€™s etched in both of our minds forever.

Another one wanted to walk to the mailbox solo and I watched her triumphantly from the deck as she returned with the white box in hands raised above her arms. Their siblings had their own unique discovery moments that are just a unique and fun as they are. Point is, a moment can happen in a lot of ways - the box stuck in the fridge, left in the mailbox, on the seat of the car - but it can be way better when it doesnā€™t happen through a notification on a USPS website (which doesnā€™t work anyway), or through a text, and it is something you can share. imo anyway.

Of course, you can think this is all hooey and do whatever you want, but regardlessā€¦I hope you all have the wonderful moment of your dreams from whichever school you will call home for the next four years.

I read admissions separates legacy applicants during decision process, but does anyone know if more weight is given the more alumni in a family? My D applied and if accepted would be 4th generation.

^^^ nicely said, @CADREAMIN

@wownaa Per USCā€¦ with circa 10K legacy applications these days, they are compelled to only admit about 10% of them. Many are offered TTP however as an option. So being a legacy does not sway or influence admission decisions to the extent that it once didā€¦

@MyaCocoa anything is possible. Just like so many have said, a lot of kids applied to 10+ schools (my DD applies to 8), and since you never know what AO are looking for, to build their class, there is always hope, until the decision day. Praying for good news for your son.
@prouddad2020 is your son leaning. I thought my DD was down to the final 2, and now she is back up to 4. I will be glad when 3/28 comes, so she has all the answers, and can make a decision.

Will be interesting to see the breakdown of acceptances per college.

@prouddad2020 Keep me updated as the decisions come in!

@CADREAMIN The way you described your sonā€™s mailbox moment, I can see it too! Thank you! Lovely!

The decisions have been made, and in just one more day, the packages will be in the hands of USPSā€¦ and around 6,370 potential new Trojans will start getting the long awaited news. Good luck to all those waitingā€¦

Has anyone received an RSVP Invitation SDAā€™s Open House in April?

This has been a hot topic the past few years and Iā€™m surprised to have heard nothing of it so far.

@CADREAMIN - Have to say that I followed your advice in January and we now have a beautiful moment captured in the camera. Totally agree with you that the kids should own this moment. They worked for it and they deserve it. Good Luck to everyone! Fight on!

@CADREAMIN Mech eng. is his major at UCSB. Civil everywhere else. Thatā€™s confusing too. Can someone tell me the difference?

@BeCheap4me2 Civil and Mechanical Engineering cross over often and I would guess the courseload would not look that much different except maybe for a few courses.

while we all sit and wait, does anyone have stats on last yearā€™s admissions to Annenberg? How competitive is admissions compared to other schools at USC?

If I live on Long Island, when do you think I will get my package if I get in???

@secondcup Here is last yearā€™s freshman profileā€¦ https://about.usc.edu/files/2018/09/USC-Freshman-Profile-2018-2019.pdf It may help you to speculateā€¦

@waterinthesink

As a Recap for the applicants waiting:

USC has announced that nearly 67K applied this cycle and that the admit rate will be circa 11%. That equates to around 7,370 being admitted overall. Since 1,000 or so were admitted in January during the scholarship phase, another 6,370 or so will be admitted this week.

The mail-out of admissions packages, sent via USPS Priority Mail, has been confirmed by USC as occurring on March 21st, with portal updates for all applicants on March 23rd at 5pm Pacific.

You can project your likely delivery window via the following linkā€¦ https://www.usps.com/priority-mail/map/ Simply use 90007 as the originating zip code. Be forewarned however that USPS is far from 100% reliable, and they do too often miss those delivery windows. The portal updates on the 23rd will be the definitive answer.

Rejection letters arrive via regular mail laterā€¦ usually received after the portals update - unless you live close enough to USC.

While you can of course try Informed Delivery via USPS, as it has worked for some, USC does not enable tracking and historically very few of those actually getting the admission packets were able to gain that same-day advanced notice. The vast majority who have had Informed Delivery, including my own family, were not able to see this particular type of package en route. But there is always a chance.

Best of luck to all those waiting for good news beginning with the packages roll-out on March 21stā€¦

USC will tweet/post to USC admission a picture of all the acceptance package in bins when they are ready to load the trucks - if they get out early on Thursday that will make a difference to how many get them on second day. I am thinking and hoping that because day 3 is a Sunday, they will try to get them out earlier on Thursday, say before 1:00pm. If not till 5:00pm, that will decrease second day deliveries.

You can look at the delivery timeline by using the link
https://www.usps.com/priority-mail/map/

But generally speakingā€¦and just for fun since we are just waiting and waitingā€¦

They will start blanketing Socal on Friday between 10:30am-1:00pm depending on who gets their mail early. Always love that first verified post! Then things start rocking around here (I think I sounded old there). Much of Socal receives the first day, but often times San Diego doesnā€™t get theirs until second day so donā€™t freak out there. Sometimes pockets of Irvine or Anaheim will be day two, but hope is they get them out earlier enough on Thursday the Socal is well covered on Friday.

Norcal, Arizona, and a lot of the Midwest will be Saturday as will many many areas of the country including a large amount of the Midwest, east coast and FLA. Bay Area and Sacramento region will be day 2, more remote areas of Norcal day 3. Philadelphia and Chicago should be day 2. The surprise is how fast these things move and how they reach a great part of the country all on the second day, but a couple major metros are skipped till day 3 - namely Seattle and Denver. Hopefully they get there faster this year! What is odd (and typical) is one neighborhood in NYC will get them, but someone a few blocks may need till day 3 or 4. So the majority around the country will receive them Saturday, but that said, there are plenty of folks that donā€™t get them and will find out with the the portal update that evening at 5:00pm. EST.

So glad they have come to their senses and made portal update earlier, and posted the time. Was always a guessing game - that was too stressful!

I will post this again and again - but when you receive a package and come on here to post PLEASE included:
Accepted!! Got it/Got in - (whatever and screaming capitals welcomed)
AND PLEASE PLEASE INCLUDE LOCATION - INCLUDING TOWN (Dallas Texas versus just Texas)
and major is a nice touch.

That is super helpful to all the anxious applicants waiting and wondering.

Do transfer students and Spring admits get the ā€œboxā€ too ?
