USC class of 2023 Applicants Thread

Do spring admits count as part of the number of students admitted? As in, if USC is planning on admitting ~6000 incoming freshman, is that only for the fall and there are other kids getting the white box but for spring, or does that number include fall and spring together?

Spring box has been a different color (yellow), regular admits box is white. Both fall and spring are admitted this round. Transfers also get box, they can get admit news anytime between later March to May (with some in June because of SGRs).

So happy to hear the news of the new president!! This is exactly what we need to hear right now from USC. From what I have read about Dr Folt, she will lead USC to great things. Fight on!!! And good luck to everyone this weekend!!

@WWWard according to the class of 2022 profile, USC admitted 8,339 students. Why would only 7,370 be admitted this year?

@IMHOPING Itā€™s because they over enrolled last year, so they have to compensate for that by admitting less students this year.

@westcoastjunior Lucky us.

@JohnGaltIII Thanks for the info. I guess we want to know what is the main difference between Civil at Cal Poly vs. Mech at UCSB? If he gets into USC, that is Civil too.

No matter how fast it is delivered, international student only waits for portal update.

At USC it is easy to move between engineering majors. They take a class early on that covers all areas of engineering to be sure they are headed to the area they are most interested in pursuing. However, at any time they could move to another area within engineering or change majors altogether or double major, add a minor etc. Any of those are easy to do, administratively speaking. Thatā€™s a major benefit of USC.

Thank you!

So both spring and fall acceptances will be sent at the same time? Also, I live in Chicago, and I looked into the interactive map provided by @WWWard and based off of that, I should expect to receive the package (if admitted) on the 23rd, how likely is it though that I wonā€™t get it on the 23rd? Iā€™m just trying to prepare myself for the likely event that I donā€™t get a package, and have an incumbent mental breakdown between the time mail is delivered, and the time the portals will be updated.

As Iā€™m three seconds away from having an anxiety attack, I feel like this is a good time to remind everyone that no matter what happens on Saturday when you open that mail box (or email) you will succeed wherever it is you end up going for college.

My S applied to SDA and just got an email saying ā€˜updateā€™ - but then once you open it, it seems to be just an email that goes out to all who applied for the program with admission decision timeline information. Did anyone get this email, it came in at about 5pm PST?

@blankcollege Chicago is pretty reliable second day, but we are talking the mail service so anything goes. If it makes you feel better, it wasnā€™t that long ago that they didnā€™t have portal updates (maybe 5-7 years???). So the packages were sent, but they didnā€™t mail the reject letter until sometimes a week later! (Then feeling was, ā€œwe only care about who we are accepting, heck with the restā€ so thank goodness that has changed.) So kids waited by their mailboxes for 7+ days trying to figure out if they were rejected or the package was lost, until the rejection letter finally showed up. Talk about a week long nervous breakdown, for students and parents. ugh.

Now that was BRUTAL.

Rooting for you!

@IMHOPING Yesā€¦ they had to allow an over-enrollment last year, due to an higher than expected yield rate. Their goal is to see enrolled 3K new freshmen. To accomplish that, they have to guess fairly accurately in terms of the yield rate. For many yearsā€¦ it was around 34%. In 2017, it jumped up to 37%. But last year, it jumped again to nearly 41%ā€¦ resulting in over 3400 new freshmen versus their target number of only 3000. They have thus apparently calculated that their yield rate overall will be around 40.7% againā€¦ which is why they are capping the # admitted to around 7370. When you consider that nearly 67K applied, thatā€™s why they had to only admit 11%.

@blankcollege Yesā€¦ both spring and fall acceptances will be sent at the same timeā€¦ and are included in that 7370 or so # being admitted in total.

On the Eve of Decision Day, I will repeat this prior post of mine in hopes that it may be helpful to someā€¦

Unfortunately, rejection does come along in life. Itā€™s what you do next that matters most. Steven Spielberg desperately wanted to attend USC SCAā€¦ so much so that he tried three times to gain admission. He was rejected all three times. And now there is a building bearing his name within the SCA complex. Bryan Singer tried and was rejected by USC and SCA. He tried a second time and got into USC but again not into SCA. He then succeeded as an internal transfer on his third try. Persistence can also pay off.

Many have faced rejection to their dream schools. In my day, for meā€¦ it was Harvardā€¦ and Harvard saw it differently. Harvard also rejected Dr. Harold Varmus twice. He simply went on to win a Nobel Prize in Medicine. Harvard also rejected Warren Buffet. They surely would like a do-over on that one. Every year around this time, it is important to remember that rejections need not control our lives. And with the way that things have evolvedā€¦ with the Common Application making it far too common for high school seniors to apply to 10+, 15+ or even 20+ schools, those rejections are bound to add up. My older daughter was rejected by 12 out of 17 in 2014. But these rejection letters are not true assessments of student aptitude or ability or the quality of an application. They are simply the natural evolution of a cruel #s game. USC could clearly admit tens of thousands of quality applicants this year. They are instead stuck with the arduous, unwelcome and nearly impossible task of only picking 7300 or so out of a field of nearly 67K. They will even have to reluctantly disappoint 90% of all legacy applicants.

As Warren Buffet says in the article linked below: ā€œThe truth is that everything that has happened in my lifeā€¦that I thought was a crushing defeat at the time, has turned out for the better. A temporary defeat is not a permanent one. In the end it can be an opportunity.ā€

To all of you active on CC or just following along without postingā€¦ good wishes and the best of luck getting in. If you do not get into USC, hopefully you will find your place at another great option. But clearly some will face disappointment. Some will not gain admission into their dream school. I wish it could be otherwise.

Hereā€™s a link to an excellent article on the subject of those who went on to great success after facing such a similar set-back as aspirational high school seniors aiming for that dream school scenarioā€¦

Good Luck. Just 1 day away nowā€¦

Who will be first to post? A little trivia for you:

2018 First to post was at 9:48am on March 23rd - parent posted she got it (early mail delivery, lucky house!) but was waiting to let son find it when he got home.

That same poster got their Financial Aid information on March 27th, four days later.

just fyi.

Hi! I just wanted to say that USC is my #1 choice, Iā€™m absolutely in love with the school and Iā€™ve been following this thread from the very beginning. I was checking it religiously all January and again this month. I just wanted to say that this thread helped me so much. It gave me so much information on everything I was dying to know and calmed a lot of my worries. Everyone is so helpful and supportive and itā€™s made this experience a whole lot easier. So thanks to all the wonderful ppl constantly posting and answering questions. I really appreciate it. Good luck to all!!!

Last year, Trustee & Presidential merit scholarship results were released tonight the evening before boxes went out. Is that confirmed for this year again? Good luck to all who interviewed this year! Fight On!
