Usc Ed

How is USC's viewpoint on ED? I know NYU is very big on early decision and admission chances are increased if you apply to NYU ED. But USC/? what's their standpoint on ED? would it help me or disadvantage me if i apply before the dec deadline?

no ED @ USC

rodney is correct. I think the reason some confuse this is because USC has two application deadlines for freshman. One is December 10 for scholarship consideration. The regular deadline is January 10.

Scholarship candidates usually do end up hearing a little bit earlier (here on CC, the first announced on January 30.) All other admittees (including those who applied by the Dec. 10 scholarship deadline but did not receive a scholarship) are notified in March. Those who are rejected usually are notified starting in April (the first one here on CC came April 2.)

(Sorry- that's more than you asked- got on a roll there.)

thanks for that. Why would acceptances start rolling in by January 30 though? Because on the website it says you should expect to hear from them on April 1st.

Also i am an international student, and mail takes a long time to get here from the US (6-8 weeks to be exact because i am living in Myanmar and the postal service here is screwed up, my AP scores actually got lost in the mail) so the time when they send acceptances is important. Is there any online way to check if you got accepted or not?

because they send out acceptances in "batches" in order that they want the students. the Jan 30ths people are the scholarship people that impress them and they are sure they want.
they basically send out the scholarships etc first in attempt to gage how many will accept. Then, based off of these, they sort of assess how many of the lower tiers they want to accept in order to get their quota.

Many scholarship candidates find out earlier because they have to come in for Explore SC in order to interview for Trustees/Presidential scholarship. If you lived on the East coast, why would you come all the way out here to interview for a scholarship if you didn't know you got in. Although, being eligible for such a substantial scholarship should be a huge tip off as is. But, anyway, those scholarship interviews are early March generally, which is why they find out so early, so they can book flights, etc.

oh that's a pretty scary process then...so basically if i don't receive a letter from USC by march...i'm rejected? Also when they send the acceptance is it a package or a normal letter....let's say in terms..would you know if you got in just by looking at the envelope...or do you actually have to open and read the letter to know if you got in or not...cos i'd prefer the letter than the package....if i don't see the package but i see USC i'd be so sadd before the envelope is even opened!

no, it doesn't mean you are rejected. Just that you are not going to get a scholarship. However, I think most acceptances come out in march, though I wouldn't be surprised if some found out in april somehow
Yes, you would know just by looking at the envelope. Acceptance envelopes are fat, page-sized envelopes.

I don't think that's the case, that if you don't find out by March it's hopeless, but I'm not sure. It is in sort of a big envelope, that's how most schools do it. USC has a really nice acceptance package, they really make you feel welcomed - all the Trojan family stuff right from the start. But don't worry if you see a small letter from USC, because they send a lot of those throughout the process. It couls just mean they need a transcript or you forgot to send a paper in, something like that.

oh so normal acceptances are after april...and scholarship acceptances are before april? this is so confusing haha. I looked at the thread that showed ppl getting accepted into USC and the ones that got rejected were the ones that got their letter in april...so basically it is if i don't receive a letter by april i'm rejected..

Plus i'm applying for the scholarship deadline, so if i'm rejected a scholarship...i'd still hear early then if i got in or not rite?

I also have a lot of friends who are very very very rich and got into USC, and rumors were started throughout the school that USC accepted them because of their nice financial statement...is it really like that? no rite? pls remember these are international students we're talking about..and their SATs were around the 1800-1900 range so not really impressive.

USC DOES NOT accept people based on money alone. The only reason that I would think that alot of "rich kids" come here is because they can afford it if they did not get a scholarship. But remember, these people also have good grades, etc.

Their international status would play a much larger role in their acceptance than their financial status. USC prides itself in being one of the most diverse universities in the world.

so a good hook would be that i'm eurasian then? because from what i've seen...everybody has good grades, good ecs and good sat scores.

USC has the most international students of any United States university, so that is for sure a factor.

Last year's dates of acceptances/rejections- (approximately!)

-->Acceptances for scholarship candidates: Jan. 30 through March 1.
-->Acceptances for all others: March 1- April 1.
-->Rejection letters went out- 1st week of April.

I'm sure there were some exceptions on this timing, but this is the best I can ascertain from last year's experiences here on CC.

I do vaguely remember last year that rejections were in fact the last to be mailed out, and that acceptnaces did come in "batches" or "waves". Amazing how fast a year goes by!

hmm still freaky haha. are all unis like this?

huh? like what?

sending out acceptances in batches

The public schools here in CA- UC, CS- release all decisions on the same day. Many of the privates I know do it in batches, but within a short period of time- usually in the month of March. This is not the same as rolling admissions like U of Arizona where they start admitting people as soon as applications are received.

USC releases acceptances in "batches" because, as another poster described, they want the scholarship contenders to know ASAP so they can set up travel plans for the scholarship interviews. The rest of the acceptances are sent out during March. All rejections are sent out about the same time- 1st week in April.

It doesn't seem so unusual because it seems that most schools we applied to did it this way. I guess I have a different definition of "freaky"!
