Depends on how well your child is covered for services outside IL. My kids both got waivers since they’re covered by my hubby’s BC/BS plan in HI. The coverage is good and we only paid a $15 co-payment for visits they made when first coming to USC campuses at the USC Health Sciences Campus. S has also gone to the Health Center on campus for allergy & asthma. No bill was received, since it was covered by the $220/semester Health Center fee assessed against students.

A friend who has Kaiser found it reassuring to purchase insurance from USC because their other kid ended up with 5 figure medical bills when she had a medical emergency & was treated at nearest hospital, which was NOT Kaiser. It’s a judgment call.

This fall, we will be purchasing USC insurance for S as well as having him covered by hubby’s policy because he’ll be turning 22 & become ineligible later in the year. He tends not to seek or need any medical help & just goes for check ups during breaks. They said that over Christmas & Summer Break, kids can go off campus for medical care & still be covered.
