Hi guys, I'm a transfer recently admitted to USC. I have until the 19th to pay my commitment deposit. I won't be able to come up with the requested $800 deposit. Does anybody know if there is a way to waive this deposit? My EFC is zero for USC and Housing was covered in my financial aid package. What steps should I take to figure this out.

I appreciate any and all help you guys can provide.

We had a similar question on the forum a few weeks ago. That student contacted USC and was told to contact the cashier’s office <a href=“Student Financial Services”>http://fbs.usc.edu/depts/sfs to request to have the commitment deposit added to their student account. NOTE: Once you make that request, you have agreed to pay that money - you can’t just say, “Nevermind” later on. Tell them what you have stated here - that your financial aid is needed to pay the deposit and follow their instructions.

Other notes: Here http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/transfer/admittedfall/nextsteps.html it says the commitment deposit is $300, not $800. Are you asking about the commitment deposit or housing deposit? Typically the fee to apply for housing is about $45 (it may be that you will have to find a way to pay this amount - I have not heard of this fee being added to the student account, though you could certainly ask) and the $800 housing deposit is not due until you receive a housing assignment - have you received your housing assignment? If so, follow the same procedure to have the housing deposit added to your student account. In July, you might consider setting up the payment plan just in case there are billed items above what your aid will cover <a href=“Student Financial Services”>Student Financial Services; .

Good luck!

@alamemom I’m sorry I should of been more clear. I was talking about the $800 housing deposit. I was recently assigned USC housing and It stated in the email that,

Online payment can be made using VISA, MasterCard or American Express credit cards only.
Making a payments to your Student Account through Financial Services is not acceptable as a deposit: payment must be made online through this secure application portal.
The billing information you will enter should match the billing address of the credit card you are using.
You can log-out and return to this step to complete the payment at anytime until the deadline to confirm your assignment.
Clicking the submit button more than once before the screen refreshes may result in multiple charges to your credit card.

My commitment deposit was waived if this matters and my EFC is zero.

Do contact student accounts for advice - the issue with the $800 housing deposit is that it is a [i/deposit* such as you would pay to a landlord of an apartment. You pay the deposit the first time you enter USC housing and then it carries over as long as you remain in USC housing. It is credited back, minus any repair fees, when you leave USC housing.

Is there any way you can earn the $800 over the summer from a summer job? If a parent has a credit card, can they pay the deposit on the card and have you pay them back in payments from your summer job? Inquire with USC to see if there are any payment plan options for the housing deposit. Be sure to contact USC housing to confirm that you want the housing you have been assigned and explain your predicament - maybe they will have some advice.

Good luck, and update us with further info.

@alamemom I contacted USC housing and financial aid, I was able to get the fee charged to my student Account. It was a relatively easy fix, that was done in under 2 hours. Thank you for your help.
