Hey, I am a transfer undergraduate and I just received my housing assignment for Fall to the apartment complex called “Founders”. It wasn’t one of my preferences, but at least its owned by USC. Has anyone heard anything about it? good or bad? It looks sorta far away :-

Hey guys,

For anyone who might have just gotten accepted as a transfer student and has NOT submitted a USC housing application and is interested in living in USC housing this might be an option for you! I have a spot available in an extremely popular apartment complex across the street from campus. It’s across the street from Cafe 84 and the Lyon Center gym facility. This apartment complex is safe and DPS is always patrolling the area. It also has it’s own parking lot. It’s a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment with a kitchen.

Send me a message if you are interested!!! Housing spots are on a first come first serve basis!

Please remember, in order to qualify for my apartment spot you cannot submit the housing application to USC. It’s their policy. I am trying to find someone to take my spot because I plan on commuting instead. Thanks guys! :)

The last time I checked there are still some students on Facebook Class of 2013 looking for congenial roommates. Perhaps they are set by now, but it might be worth looking through the housing posts. Good luck.

It is not for everybody, but some students do pledge Greek groups and move into the chapter houses.

On campus: good places to live
suites:
Fluor is more social
Parkside is nicer and newer
Dorms:
New/North, most social, party dorm. Central location
Birnkrant:also social, but has down time. Preferred by most; hardest to get into so do it early!! Cleaner than new/north. Central location
Pardee Tower: floors are divided girls floor and guys floor. Central location. Fun but not as preferred by the other two
Radisson hotel: nice rooms, maid service, but it is across the street so not as convenient

Off campus apartments:
Gateway: right across from campus. Convenient shopping center, gym, parking underneath building. Very new, very safe. EXPENSIVE
Anything along University St. is pretty safe (that is the walk way to 30th street from crossing hoover and jefferson). I believe these are called Troy and Troy East, usually the sophomores live in these apartments.
Cardinal Gardens not the most luxurious but generally pretty safe.
Anything along 30th between Hoover and Figueroa is good: The Carribean, The Mirage, the Spot, The Bungalows. Close to the row where everyone parties, but convenient to get to campus as well.
The area across from the Shrine on 32nd
that corner Shrine Pl and Loyal meets 32nd. So Roma, Chez Ronee, Habitat Soozee, etc. those are good and lots of people live there
Anywhere near 28th St where all the Greek housing is safe, so everything on 27th behind the row is pretty safe as well, but not as nice. For example the Moon, and the one next to the Moon.

If you go across hoover, the apartments right on the other side are pretty safe and not too far. Definitely do not go farther than Vermont. People also live on Ellendale and Menlo, but I do not recommend it for first time students as that area is confusing and not as convenient.
Most freshmen are required to live on campus I believe, and if you join a sorority you can live in the greek housing starting second semester which is really nice, convenient and safe.
Definitely get a bike and use common sense at night and travel in groups when going out at night.

Let me know if you have any more questions!!

Congrats & Fight ON! :)

So I’m going to be road tripping it up to LA next week to look at apartments, and I’m wondering about those that are in the Ellendale Place/Orchard Ave/West 27th/West 29th area. What do you guys think of this area? Is it safe? I’d like to contact a few of those places to set up appointments to view the apartments but would love to hear more about the area first. Thanks!
Ellendale is nicer and wider than Orchard which always seems dirty/dumpy and frankly is a bit scary looking, it is a very crowded and narrow street. Ellendale properties look a lot nicer, even though just a block apart. I am pretty familiar with those two, but I can’t speak to 27th or 29th. After having someone in this area the last few years (off of Adams) I can say the one thing about this area is that places to eat aren’t that convenient and you really need a car to get food anywhere besides Ralph’s grocery store. Also wouldn’t want my Adams student going back and forth between campus alone late at night (even being big strong athlete type) without a car so that can be limiting. My second is at Gateway and enjoys much more diversity in eating steps from his apartment. So when looking, check conveniences of area besides just proximity to campus. Good luck!
Thanks for the reply, Cadreamin! I read that most of the properties in that area are only about 10 minutes walking distance to campus though; have you found that to be true? If so, does your Adams student walk to the restaurants near campus? As for the safety, has he run into any issues late at night walking back and forth to campus?
Thanks again.
Most of the closest places to eat in that area are over on Figuroa.
He just got a car down there but over the last couple years relied on a bike. Adams is a long walk as is Ellendale at the Adams end. 27th and 29th are a tad closer. There are eateries on Figueroa like Pasta Roma, tons of burger joints which are quite a long walk, and then of course everyone’s favorite Chipotle along with Quiznos, Built, which is a good distance from most locations at that end of campus, you wouldn’t walk there and even biking is a bit of a trek but he has done that (anything for Chipotle). Frankly, he does a lot of delivery (even breakfast on the weekends and it looks good, I’ve seen it) from LA Cafe. I’ve noticed charges for a little place called “The Study Hall” a cute cafe that is relatively close to the 27th/29th area. At a minimum, you will want a bike if in that area, walking will get old I believe. The good news is you are close to Ralphs and they have everything you could need from food, drink to housewares. Ralph’s is the melting pot of the world, talk about diversity in every possible aspect, it is always entertaining there.
Thanks, Cadreamin!
One more question: if I apply for on-campus housing but end up deciding to live off-campus, is there any penalty? Would it effect my financial aid if I changed it to “on campus housing” and then didn’t use it? Is there any negative to applying for on-campus housing just in case?
I guess that ended up being three questions, haha.
