I'm impressed by the steady stream of mail we're getting from USC. Today, we got a DVD from Viterbi School of Engineering. It's well done & very upbeat & talks about the different specialities offered by the school, as well as groups you might want to get involved with at USC--marching band, theater, student government, travel abroad, etc. In past days, we've gotten other mailings from the engineering department & USC as well. As hubby says, it is not overwhelming because it's just another small piece instead of a huge packet.....helps you keep them in mind. <grin></grin>

I too just received this "V Key;" I personally think USC overdoes it a bit. I applied to ten schools in total, got into five of them, and I'd say I've received about as much mail from USC as from all of the nine other schools combined. Sometimes I wonder if they realize that few schools send out nearly as much mail.

Maybe the mail will reduce after May 1, when all the deposits have been mailed. Perhaps if there were a little less mailed, the cost of attending might be able to drop just a tad?!?!? Son has received a LOT more from USC than the other 3 schools he was accepted at put together too.

I like getting all the mail. It makes me feel wanted.

I'm always excited to get a letter from a college, even if it's telling me that I have missing information in my financial aid file.

Any kind of communication builds loyalty between prospective student and university.

I find the mail my S gets more interesting than he does. <sigh> It is nice that it's for schools he is interested in now rather than random schools snowing us.</sigh>

I agree, I like the mail I'm getting from USC. USC was the nicest acceptance package, and they are one of the few schools that are keeping me up to date. I like it. :)

I didn't get that much things. Most of the things i got was from NYU (which rejected me so it hurts more) I really would like to receive more things from USC though...

Viterbi school of engineering is not very good, especially in comparison with other UC schools.

Where did you get such info? Viterbi is one of the best engineering schools in the country. Stanford and Caltech may be better, but it's still a top school.

I have heard my information from various news rankings and students that attended Viterbi and other engineering schools. UCLA and Berkeley both have better programs in this field than USC and these are just two of many schools.

That's funny dragon17. I have heard vey good things about Viterbi, and it competes w/ UCLA. CAL of course, is supreme, but I'm pretty sure Viterbi is up to par w/ other top engineering schools.

dragon17: UCLA engineering? are you kidding me?

Well, I don't know much about engineering, but...I do like getting mail from USC :) Postcards, letters, brochures, applications...the admissions office is definitely on top of things.

Has anyone form Annenberg gotten any "extra" mail since being accepted?

Dragon -

Per USNEWS, yes UCLA is rated higher. The decision is yours to make for whatever combination of reasons that are important to you.

For us, USC's Engineering has (so far) been vastly superior to UCLAs. The tour of USC's Viterbi's facilities, seeing lowerclass students work in Engineering Labs, side by side with Grad students and faculty, is awesome. The continuous personal contact made by USC (Engineering Interview in December, Presidential Scholarship Interview and Explore USC tours in Feb, Meet USC Tour last summer, etc. UCLA has done little to show us what they have to offer. Yes, they can list on paper, their ranking. I respond with "show me the beef".

Tell you what, you find a link like this one at UCLA that indicates that Freshman Engineering students will be working on this type of research.

Yes, UCLA is rated higher. But which school will you graduate from with the most hands-on research.

I'll gladly trade UCLA's ranking (on a job application) for hands-on research work with JPL and NASA (on a job application)

Again, the decision is yours to make, using your own criteria.
Good luck to you, at whichever school you attened.
Both schools are top schools.
We chose USC for many reasons. Above are just a few of them.

OMG, don't turn this into a USC vs UCLA thread. We all know that the Trojans are superior - end of story. Dragon17, you need to go to the UCLA blog if you are not a Trojan fan.

I personally like all the mail from USC. The Viterbi School has gone out of their way, to tout their school and all it has to offer. Who can complain about that? Makes me want to go there more and more each day, the more I learn about it, and I can't wait until August!

Dragon: My brother has worked at JPL (through Cal Tech) last 2 summers and most of the interns there are from UCLA and Cal Tech not USC .
Maybe some people didn't like the UCLA tour, the Engineering Open House yesterday blew my best friend and his family away. The stats from US News and others were already there. Everyone has their own decision to make but the Camp person must have gotten financial aid from USC. That's the only reason someone would pick USC over UCLA/CAL if they were comparing the stats and the opportunities.

I would say something, but it would only exacerbate the situtation.

On another note, I like the junk USC sends me, too. I have a stack of USC letters, postcards, and packets. Compared to what the UCs send me...

I got into Princeton, Stanford, and they send out more mail than USC. I get a fair amount of mail from UCLA, UCB and UCSD too. I started hitting the reject button recently. That will stop the mail.

Really? If I heard correctly, UCB doesn't even send out rejection letters. Personally, I haven't received anything from UCLA and UCB besides my acceptance letter and my financial aid. UCSD sent me those and a housing booklet.

USC sends me a crapload of stuff. The admissions folder, my TO invitation, FSH invitation, housing confirmation, college honors society invitation, financial aid letter, FSH acceptance, etc. Mudd sends me a lot of letters, but no pretty stuff.
