Usc marshall business .vs. Georgetown mcdonough???

Hi,
I have been admitted to USC's Marshall School of Business and Georgetown's McDonough school of Business.
I just don't know which one to choose! :S

Can anyone give me their opinion on where to go? What decision would you make?
I know it is ultimately up to me but I'm really on the fence about this.

By the way, I live in London, England.

My problem:
USC is my dream school. I just think I would have the greatest time there.
But.. I also am pretty sure I would have a great time at Georgetown (just maybe not as great)

Can I really choose USC over Georgetown?
In terms of Business, Marshall is generally ranked higher BUT I don't know enough about California to limit my future career possibilities to the West Coast.

I can imagine myself working in NYC after college or I may even come back to London (I'm not sure what will happen!).

Georgetown - more difficult to get in to. the name recognition over USC. Is it foolish to turn it down?

Or is USC recognised all over the states? I know its a GREAT school but I'm just afraid its undervalued.
And does USC have any international recognition in Europe? I know it has great connections with Asia.

Thank you everyone for your help!

Gtown is better for your purposes. You’d be attending an east coast school (once you go west, you stay west) and you’ll be closer to European jobs (USC doesn’t have that kind of recognition in Europe.) Also, GTown is grossly under-ranked for business. Recruitment from there is top notch.

Wow, talk about different schools! I know a girl who transferred from USC and she says its like day and night. USC is a large public school. Greek life rules and I heard the neighborhood isn’t so safe. It’s just a different environment. We work hard and play hard at Georgetown but we don’t do it USC-style.

If you are looking rankings, I have to say to take them with a grain of salt. Georgetown is a Wall Street school. All the top firms recruit here and we are typically one of their top three feeder schools. The recent financial crisis and the downturn in Wall Street hiring really hurt our rankings. When I came in three years ago, we were #11. But hiring has rebounded dramatically. By the time you are looking for an internship, being a Hoya will mean a lot more than being a USC student.

Both are great universities, so the greatest factor of importance right now is location. Both universities receive top notch recruiters and they both have great general recognition because of their sports (USC have the Trojans, Georgetown have the Hoyas) and their ranking is not too far apart.

So, it’s either Los Angeles or Georgetown. Neither of them are situated in very safe neighborhoods (yes, even Georgetown). D.C. used to be one of the most violent cities in the United States, but of course it has become significantly safer. USC has the famous LA weather - sunshine, sunshine, sunshine, even in the middle of December. So if you don’t like snow or rain (it rains occasionally), then USC is the place for you. Georgetown has the east coast weather so it’s very cold.

If you are going back to Europe, then Georgetown probably has a better reputation. And as necrophiliac said, where you go is usually where you stay. But I seriously doubt you want to stay in the U.S.

My heart is with USC. i love the idea of southern california, its just so different to here in London and sunshine just generally makes me a happier person (I am OBSESSED with weather).

I also see Georgetown to possibly have a more cookie-cutter approach to teaching the students how to be perfect for I-Banking. I see myself being a bit more creative with business and possibly going in to entertainment business, but then again I am not sure what I will want in 4 years.

I’m making a trip next week to see both USC and Georgetown’s full day events so hopefully I will like one place significantly better than the other!

BUT… I just can’t stop thinking about my future past college. I have no idea what I will be doing but I want to be prepared for whatever it is. I want to be able to come back to London if I want to come back to London. Working in NY after college is a very realistic outcome as well… I just hope Marshall is respected over there…?

Another thing… Georgetown is REALLY hard to get in to… Do you think it would be foolish to turn down such a place for another college that isn’t as difficult to get in to?

Thanks for both your help.

Hey, if USC and SoCal is your thing, go for it! There is no right answer, there’s only the right one for you.

Thanks Firefly88.
But what you said before… that’s what’s worrying me!
I have a feeling that the rankings are slightly misleading for GTOWN (maybe coz its lack of money etc.). My bro went to MSB and he has done fantastically well. He told me that in his training courses, a tonne of the kids were Hoyas. He doesn’t know much about Marshall.

But… if I want to go in to Entertainment Business… no doubt… USC is my place.
I-Banking… I think GTOWN is best, but I wouldn’t want to go to a college only because of its Wall Street Recruiting advantages… would I?

Thanks again!

If you are looking to break into Hollywood, then USC may be your better choice. It’s closer. I assume they have better ties than Georgetown. And you might be able to get a school year internship.

But almost everyone’s plans change after entering college.

Yeah exactly so I can’t make up my mind now coz in 4 years, my feelings could be completely different.
I just want to be prepared for anything.

As Firefly88 and you yourself mentioned, if it’s Entertainment, then USC has the clear lead. Honestly, if you wanted a place where Entertainment + Wall Street mixed well, you should have applied to NYU, it is very strong in both areas.

yeah, thats true but I just really didn’t want to go to NYU as an undergrad. Not the experience I’m looking for.
