USC marshall v Gtown msb v Berkeley haas

Hey I'm having a hard time deciding Which school to go to. Money isnt really a problem but it's still A factor so here are thr facts. USC I'm still waiting to hear back from for money but I should be having to pay around 10k a year. I'm from jersey and Berkeleys costing me 30k a year(24k scholarship 14k loan 16k just paying off). Georgetown is giving me 53k scholarship so I have to pay 5k a year(2k loan 3k just money). I'm leaning against Berkeley because I feel as though it will be a waste Of my time if I dont get into haas. I know at Gtown McDonough has a new building and they're ranking has improved over the years but I don't know how much that should be taken into consideration. Also at USC I've been offered to be in thr global leadership program (glp) Which is only offered to the top tEn percent of the incoming class. It is highlighted by a week in shanghai or Beijing and I get to meet top execs and I have priority over others to join jOint programs(I would do international relations/business) but I donno how much international relations help business. I am leaning towards Gtown or USC and I feel that Gtown has bEtter name recOgnition but my brother who is going to be graduating from wharton this year says that USC and Berkeley have more name recOgnition in the business wOrld. Please feel free to give me any advice facts or opinions that migt make this easier for me

I say go to USC if you want to settle down in Southern California or the West. Georgetown if you want to stay on the East Coast.

“USC I’m still waiting to hear back from for money but I should be having to pay around 10k a year. I’m from jersey and Berkeleys costing me 30k a year(24k scholarship 14k loan 16k just paying off). Georgetown is giving me 53k scholarship so I have to pay 5k a year(2k loan 3k just money).”

These are some VERY BIG DIFFERENCES. Berkeley is not even possible for you unless your parents are taking out most of that loan, or co-signing with you. The only loans you can get on your own are the Staffords, and the limit for your freshman year is $5,500 Right now it looks like Georgetown is your only affordable option. Run all of your aid packages through this calculator, and then talk the results over with your parents. You do not want to graduate from any college with the kind of debt Berkeley would leave you with.
I’d go to USC or Georgetown. USC is probably the better option, unless if you want to live and work on the east coast long term, then I’d go for Georgetown. Berkeley is too expensive.

My parents said they would pay off my tuition at either one of these three colleges

jkwag4,

If your parents are able and willing to pay for everything, then you are truly in a fortunate situation. Do sit down with them though, and work through the numbers. They may have a secret preference for you to take the biggest scholarship possible. They truly may not care at all, and have plenty of money stashed away. That you have been offered such a big scholarship at Georgetown, makes me suspect that money is an issue for your family. It was my understanding that Georgetown only offered need-based aid.

Yeah money really isn’t the issue does it make that much of a difference where I want to work in te future

Georgetown vastly out-places the other two.

does it really? Doesnt both usc and berkeleys business schools have more name recognition?

Nope. Georgetown has more name recognition on the west coast than both Berkeley Haas and USC have on the East Coast. On the west coast Georgetown is more prestigious than USC and perhaps equal to Berkeley as evidenced by the fact that California is the third largest feeder to Georgetown after NJ and NY. Fewer top students travel west to attend USC and Berkeley

The other big difference is that Georgetown is a student centered research institution which means that it emphasizes undergraduate teaching in a traditional environment (like a LAC) while at the same time offering many of the opportunities found at a large research university near a major city like Berkeley.

With all due respect to your brother he is still only a student so take his opinion with a grain of salt and look at the schools where most Wall Street Banks recruit their incoming analysts. I think you will find that Georgetown does better in this regard. That is a pretty good indicator of how Georgetown is regarded in the business world.

Also, Berkeley and Georgetown are considered top colleges on CC and have been for many years. USC is not, although it is up and coming.

^Berkeley and USC have great name recognition in Asia, especially Berkeley, for at least 20 years, while Georgetown has very little. I am sorry, but this is true.

Well, if your main criterion for choosing school is brand name power and your parents are willing to support you, then choose Berkeley-Haas. It is head and shoulders superior to Marshall and McDonough in the business community and corporate world, whether in the United States or outside of the United States. Again, it is not even close.

If this was a Haas vs Ross or Haas vs Stern story, then the favor would be against Haas since you’re from the East Coast and both Ross and Stern are just as renown and respected. But Marshall and McDonough are in the league below Haas’.

I actually got into Michigan as well but eventually cut it down from my choices. Anymore advice? I must decide by Sunday and any info or input would be greatly appreciated.

^ Michigan Ross is a great option. How do those costs compare?

For the money Georgetown is throwing at you, I think I’d go there. Unless USC comes back and makes it practically no cost for you.

Hypothetically speaking if USC gave me the same amount as Gtown what then?

^ My advice remains as I said in Post #2.

Thank you ucb anymore thoughts anyone?

UPDATE: at usc i got 50,000 scholarship 5500 loan and 2674 dollars a year payment. Since loans are essentially like paying I have to pay 8000 a year at both georgetown and usc, the similarities are just making the decisions harder. PLEASE HELP

How could u be sure that you’'l be able to get into HAAS. That’s 2 years away.

I’m not confident that I will get into haas, which is one of the downsides to Berkeley as I addressed in my first post. Right now I’m pretty much deciding between Georgetown and USC.
