***USC School of Cinematic Arts (Class of 2021 Discussion/Results)***

Congrats @filmstudent2!

Congrats @filmstudent2! Hoping my daughter can join you. We think we are in day 2…so tomorrow for us.

Congrats @filmstudent2 !!! Yay

Our son received and e-mail notification from USC last year. They must have changed to “mail only” this year.

thank you guys so much!! :0 and good luck to you all!

Did you get in?

@Lalo Yes… she was admitted USC SCA as a CMS major today.

Congrats! I admire your patience.

thank you! I was agonizing over the wait!

Admitted to Film and TV Production yesterday! Congrats to @filmstudent2 !

Congrats @tvlover9 !! Did you receive a phone interview?
Just curious. No mail for us in NY so I’m assuming it’s a no.

Just got the mail and I am still shaking - admitted to SCA Writing for Screen and Television!

I live in NoVa

Congratulations to all the newly accepted SCA students. I know several SCA freshman and they all absolutely love it. You are a special bunch for sure

My D got her white box this afternoon (North Carolina) - SCA Animation - which was her second choice (first choice was Film)! She is so excited but was wondering about double majoring/possibly transferring to Film… is that unheard of?

Congratulations to those admitted. What an astonishing hurdle to have cleared.

Big hugs to those who are not–my heart goes out to all of you who may be disappointed. I’m a wreck over @WWWard who has been simply awesome with help on the USC CC forums. So for those who do not get that 3 out of 100 stroke of good fortune, it’s USC’s loss. With your other great school admissions in hand, the world is waiting for your talent. Go get 'em.

And now a mom-style anecdote. There was a very successful team of TV writers/producers I know and one of them did not get into the school he was dying to attend. At his new school, on the first day of class, he sat next to another boy and said hello. The soon started writing together and sold a tv script!! Onward they went. When this superstar TV producer talks to students, he mentions that had he gotten into his dream school, he’d never be where he was. Best thing that happened to him.

So go out and embrace whatever school you go to. Open to meeting people just as fabulous as you are. Realize that no school anywhere hands you a career or even the keys. It’s all up to each of us, every day. We have the power. I’m waiting to see all the fabulous creative things you will one day present to the world.

@madbean Thanks.

While we still cling to that small glimmer of hope that maybe it is an USPS processing error or delay, the cruel reality is more likely that she was rejected… and more surprisingly - by both SCA and USC overall. Clearly, anyone can face an SCA rejection. Their admit rates are insanely competitive, & the creative review process is by its very nature highly subjective.

But a rejection by USC overall would of course be surprising to us, as her stats and overall application (at least IMO) were stronger than her sister’s - who is at USC now. But who knows… maybe they figured that if they are rejecting her from SCA, they might as well reject her overall - as she will likely go elsewhere.

Yes… she has 6 other admits already, including Rice, Emory, UTexas, and has 6 more decisions pending, but she would gladly forfeit all 6 and any to come for a ticket to USC. And ironically, a projected 66% of those being admitted to USC this week will now in turn ultimately reject USC and enroll elsewhere. It is too bad that we cannot simply set-up a barter system among applicants.

Oh well… if the portal update tonight confirms what we now suspect has happened, she will likely move on much more easily than I. It will not undo or diminish all of the positive things that I have said about USC on CC to date, but it will be a hard dose of reality to accept. Who knows… maybe they judge siblings harder or were simply more swayed by the impact that other applicants could bring in theory to USC. They also had different regional admission reps, so maybe they each see applicants differently. None of us will ever truly know the reasons that rejections are handed down.

As you suggested… there are those numerous success stories - like Spielberg and the Duffer Brothers - who now joke about their SCA rejections. Maybe my daughter can be one of those too in time. She is 17 and is already in negotiations with a production co about developing a script she wrote into a pilot, for example. So she is not one to sit by and let others dictate her path or success. But there is no escaping the disappointment. I doubt that anyone applied sooner (Aug 2nd) or demonstrated a greater desire to be there, but such is the reality of this ultra-competitive landscape.

Good luck to those still waiting on the mail or portal updates… and congrats to those already admitted.

Is your daughter a NMSF as well? From the other thread, it looks like the high stat NMSF are the ones getting rejected…

Hey everyone, I’m not an active user on CC, but I’ve been an SCA admit (Writing for Screen and Television major) since January thanks to a nomination for the Trustee Scholarship!

Just wanted to pop in and let you know that we’ve set up a GroupMe group chat for newly-admitted students to the SCA Class of 2021 to join and get to know other admits!

The join link is here:

Hope to see you there!

@SATHater No. 3.98 uw, top-5, 1490, 32, 7 APs… but her real strength was essays, ECs and creative portfolio.

I do not necessarily think that USC is denying super high stat kids as a form of yield protection necessarily. It is just a super-competitive environment these days, & it is up to the subjective analysis of each school. For example, on paper… it is harder to get into Rice, where she was admitted, than USC or UVa - where she was also rejected. UVa also rejected a friend of my daughter’s with a 4.0 uw, 1520, 35.

Last year, there were many CC posts of kids getting into Stanford, Yale, MIT and the like while getting rejected at USC. So it does make you wonder though…

I’m shocked @WWWard that your daughter wasn’t at least accepted to the university. Being that her sister goes there too! Maybe the mail is delayed? I’ve got my fingers crossed for you.

Our mailbox was empty too but I’m not surprised because his grades/scores are on the low side for USC and he said bfa film production or nothing.
