USC SDA open house invite 2017

I tried to bump the previous thread, but please post here if you receive the invitation from USC for the April Open House. Last year, it came with the acceptances, but it might come earlier in the week this year.

Sending all who auditioned/interviewed for USC SDA this year the best. If there are any questions I can answer, I’ll try. My S was admitted BFA but decided to go the BA route instead (he double majored at the film school). The SDA open house is a wonderful event and includes tickets to see this year’s musical “Evita.” Enjoy!

@madbean Is your son in Evita? My daughter is on pins and needles! Such a low acceptance rate, but we can’t help hoping and dreaming!

How does your S like the BA program? My D applied as a transfer and has her phone interview tomorrow. She’s a bit nervous…Do you know what type of question they will ask?

Sorry I meant to @madbean

My son is a current BA at USCSDA… he also opted for the BA rather than the BFA… I have a daughter who did a BFA IN MT at another school… USC has really been such a great school for our son… happy to answer any questions.

@portalupdateplz , my S graduated in 2015, but he is going to see Evita. :slight_smile: Both the BA and BFA programs work very well for different students. BA’s we know took a lot of elective classes in acting/performance with same level instructors as BFA–an option that allowed more personalization of coursework. BAs can also take a minor in Musical Theatre. The training for both BA and BFA is really great, but the BFA’s seemed especially close-knit since they do their productions together, rehearse together, and take all SDA classes together. BAs have a bit more time to do other activities, make other friends if they want. SDA produces many shows and since each class of BFAs do one BFA show/semester, there are many casting opportunities in all the other productions for BAs. In addition, there are independent student productions that can be amazing. For my S’s friends, the tipping point was that the BA’s can continue auditioning for professional jobs which was perfect for those who had (or got) agents. Like @mybroadwaybaby , I’m happy to answer any specific questions.

@madbean @mybroadwaybaby Thanks for all of the great information. I will PM you both if she gets in. Trying not to get myself too excited right now. No postcard yet here. I wonder if they still do those early? Oh well, I guess it’s only a few days now!

no post card today. I think thats a bad sign :frowning:

Nothing for my D either :frowning:

Received an acceptance to the BA program this past weekend (didn’t audition for BFA) after NOT having received the invite! Although I received the one that I believe most applicants receive earlier this year, I didn’t receive the one that people speak of so often before the admissions so I was beginning to think I wouldn’t be accepted. I haven’t heard much about the invites this year so I’m not even sure whether or not they did them this year, but for future applicants: if you don’t receive the invite late March before decisions, don’t stress out!!! Also @madbean and @mybroadwaybaby I may be asking you guys a few questions later :slight_smile:

Congrats @theatregirl97 ! That’s awesome!

Hi @theatregirl97, congratulations! That’s so exciting!..my D is applying as a transfer to the BA program. She had her phone interview last week. It was suppose to be at 2pm and they called her at 11:30am, so it through her off a little bit. Do you mind telling me how your interview went? and your stats? We haven’t seen very many SDA BA admits posting on CC.

Thank you @WorkOfHeart17! and @skysmom I think I made a more in-depth post of my experience on my account around December because my phone interview also threw me off because I had to reschedule, but otherwise I felt quite confident about the interview. I didn’t think it was incredible or anything especially considering that phone interviews can be rather impersonal, but I felt like I showed the interviewer who I was and what I was interested in and asked a lot of questions! As for my stats I have a 30 ACT and I’m not sure what my unweighted GPA would be because my school only really calculates weighted but I had about 1 or 2 Bs on my transcript. Best of luck to your daughter!

@theatregirl97 thanks for the info!..I thought her interview sounded very authentic and not too practiced, so I’m hoping that works in her favor, lol. She probably won’t find out until her semester ends in June if she has been accepted, so we have a bit of wait ahead of us…good luck to you!

@theatregirl97 ask away! And congrats!!

I have 2 D’s at USC who minor in theatre, but they are heavily involved in SDA. Their housemate, BA Theatre major, is Evita in “Evita” and one of my Ds is also in the show. If you have any questions, I might be able to help or pass them on to all the theatre kids in their house - I think there are 9 of them!
