I'm planning on submitting my application for scholarship consideration for USC on Dec 1st. However, my counselor and teachers haven't written the recommendation forms yet. Are the teacher recommendation forms due the same time as the scholarship deadline? Can I still submit my common app to USC (and have them submit at a later time) or do I have to wait for my counselor and teachers to submit their forms?

Submit your application on time.

If you have hard copies of the recommendations, upload or FAX them in with a note that the official submission will follow as soon as possible.

If you do not have hard copies, again submit your application on time and then Monday camp out in your counselor’s office until they submit - do not take no for an answer. After school go to your teacher and do the same. If the letters come in in the next week or so, you will be fine (but don’t tell the teacher/counselor that - be sure to stress they need to do it MONDAY or they won’t even start until the end of next week…).

The problem is that unless you’ve told them the Dec 1st deadline for USC’s scholarship, there is no way your teacher or counselor know as the common app deadline is Jan. If they’ve written rec’s for USC before, they might remember. Before you “camp out” in the counselor’s office or approach your teacher, keep that in mind. Under no circumstances should you be FAXing hard copies: you should have waived your right to see them. USC will understand. Be upfront with your teacher and tell the truth.

Whether you told them or not (and I agree it would have been proper to tell them far in advance) at this point you cannot afford to be understanding about them planning to submit in January, because if they do so you will not be considered for scholarships. Camp out - cry if you have to…

Absolutely send hard copies if you have them. USC will understand, however, if they do not get them in time to consider for scholarships, you will not be considered for scholarships…
