Hello everybody! I got accepted into the Viterbi School of Engineering for Spring 2016 (I originally wanted Fall 2015). What do you all think about entering as in the spring? Is it possible to appeal for the fall? How many other people are in my situation?
Waiting to hear back @Rosco458 ! I decided if I get in for spring, im gonna go to SMCC so I can meet people first and kinda get in the culture of the school instead of just jumping in half way through the year
Hey! Also accepted into Marshall School of Business for for Spring 2016.
I just have some concerns, because I want to graduate and walk in Spring 2017, so I feel like I will have to rush and finish my school in just a year and a half.
Also, I don’t want to miss out on the football games and the spirit and the new beginnings of fall if that makes sense.
Since I didn’t get notified of acceptance to USC until a couple days ago, I had to sir and submit housing for UCLA costing around 3,000. So my plan right now is to wait until my financial aid package comes, and figure out if I can even afford SC haha! And if I can, I’m going to still attend ️UCLA in the fall because it’s a marvelous school and if I feel like I need to be at Marshall at the end of the semester, I’ll either leave or stay :-S
Hi! I’m also concerned about it, but I am Sociology major (less requirements compared to engineering haha). I actually prefer a Spring Admit at this point because I got my acceptance really late (housing would be stressful at this time) AND I can go back to my CC to finish the remaining GEs needed for USC (save money). I don’t think it’s too bad. The packet said you can still go to football games!! I’ll also be stopping by the campus a lot, if anything.
As of right now, I’m waiting for the financial aid package before I finalize my decision.
Hey there. I’m also a spring admit. I’m sorry to say that it seems next to impossible to appeal
I first told my counselor and he harshly responded that “there was NO WAY I could be switch to fall and that it wasn’t going to happen, so I should stop that line of discussion” I don’t remember his exact words, but I was so saddened by his email that I even felt the need to apologize
Next I tried emailing the Dornsife Admissions and they responded that there is no process to appeal. Finally, I sent a letter to the president of USC and the dean of Dornsife, but I haven’t gotten any kind of response. I wasn’t really expect one since he is the president and all, but I was hoping maybe my being daring enough to contact the president might work in my favor?
I think it really does suck. This should be something reserved for freshmen since they can actually afford to waste a semester. I have so many units at CC that I can’t even take anymore - they literally sent me an email saying I have to many units and that I need to appeal/explain why I need to take more if I continue taking classes there. I tried to explain this to the people I contact at USC, but they didn’t budge I guess I could just take summer school though because I don’t see any other way how I’d graduate in Spring 2017 either.
How many people do you think are in our situation? According to USC’s student profile, 1,600 of the 18,000 undergrads are transfers. So there’s probably at least a few hundred who are transfer spring admits, right? My main concern is coming into USC at such an awkward time. Does anyone know if USC has an orientation program for transfers spring admits?
@Rosco458 I think a few hundred get spring admission each year. And yeah the orientation is in January!!
@zettasyntax this is so hard. I’ve also seen you on the UCLA forum, and I was wondering how’d orientation to? Did it make you feel like a bruin?
It’s hard to give up the chance to be a Trojan, especially Marshall. Meeeeeep blahhhhh hahah
@Rosco458 The packet given in the mail said there are about 200 transfer spring admits and 200-300 freshman spring admits. It is definitely an awkward time, but I don’t think it will be that bad! At least we’re not alone. If I decide to attend, I will be roaming around the campus a lot, just so it doesn’t feel too foreign to me when I enter in the Spring.
Btw @Ellie64, if you go to this page: usc(dot)edu/springadmit ; It says you shouldn’t enroll in a 4 year university during the time period before Spring. Not sure if you saw that.
@mochibbycake it says you shouldn’t, but not that it’s prohibited
It seems like a lot of USC transfers are from Cali. Where are you all from? I go to school in PA but am from the Boston area.
@ellie64 I was actually looking for a spring admit facebook page but thanks!
It seems like we are left out in truly experiencing the year by joining in the Spring, but I’m so thankful to be admitted. I’m going to make the best of it as I live driving distance away. I’ll be attending football games, joining a club or two and possibly finishing up that pesky 3 year foreign language requirement in the fall.
If anyone decides to make a FB page for us send me a PM!
@Ellie64 It’s up to you!
@Rosco458 I live about 15-20 minutes away from USC so I’m really close by.
Also, a current USC transfer friend of mine said it’s common for transfers to be in their 5th year (he was also a spring admit) because of all of those requirements…
@mochibbycake 5 years with USC’s price tag and not receiving financial aid :((
@Ellie64 Well, not 5 years, but 5th year!!! Haha. I’m a junior transfer so that might mean 3 years with USC. And I haven’t received my FA package yet so I’m worried about that as well. I really want to go to USC, but I don’t want to be in tons of debt
Wondering if anyone knows about going for the Fall semester abroad with USC until we officially start in the Spring? There are programs for freshmen Spring admits on-line but does that also include transfer students?
@Ellie64 Orientation actually went kinda bad to be honest. I thought it was silly/cool to be “bruintized” as if we were becoming Bruins and I loved the campus. However, when it came to registering for classes, I felt like my opinion didn’t really matter. I was last when it came to having a one-on-one session with my advisor (there had been dozens of people in the room, but I was in the room alone with my advisor and everyone else was gone). I also couldn’t get to take the classes I wanted to take - not a single one, so that didn’t really shine UCLA in the best light. I thought the whole point of the orientation was to allow us to register for any class we wanted - especially the ones that are “hard to get”. I just did not enjoy the experience. I felt really ignored. However, I have no idea how USC’s orientation would go - if they tell us what classes we must take our first semester by limiting our options. I wanted to minor, but I was not allowed to take a required course for the minor as my UCLA advisor said an elective course must be upper division or we can’t take it.
By the way, they took a few jabs at USC They called them mustard and ketchup and that as a punishment for breaking UCLA’s rules (such as being on academic probation for too long), we get to go to USC.
@zettasyntax My son was a Freshman Spring admit and his USC adviser had a four year course plan prepared and got him into closed classes. There were only two closed at that point.
For the Fall he went to AUP in Paris. The school was good but his apartment was burglarized and it was a 40 minute Metro ride from the school.
His first semester at USC was bumpy for the first 2-3 weeks as he figured everything out but he quickly found his tribe. After that it was as if he was always there. The toughest part for him was being admitted as Undecided which meant he had to get at least a B in two CS courses and in Math. He got an A and A- in the two CS but a B- in math 225 (linear algebra) because he bombed the final which was worth 40%. But they still accepted him into Viterbi. Waiting the three weeks for that decision was horrible.
He is thrilled to be at USC.
@GamerGal27 That sounds promising! I really hated how my advisor at UCLA’s orientation basically forced me to take an elective I did not want to take by making me go last. I wound up with some random Mexican geography class. I mean sure I’m Mexican, but it’s not really a class I need to take Our advisor told us that they wouldn’t even bother to enroll us in classes that had a waitlist since we wouldn’t get in anyway - yikes.
I’m slowly coming to believe that maybe being a spring admit isn’t as bad as I’ve made it out to be And it’s awesome that USC wasn’t super strict with your son! I wanted to minor in CS if I went to USC and I believe I saw that a student needs to get two B’s in order to be admitted into the minor. It’s nice to know that if I get a B-, I still might get to take up the minor
@zettasyntax it’s actually three courses for the major (2 CS and 1 Math). I think it’s even easier for the minor. My son is in the process of adding a game audio minor and all he had to do is send the request to the Cinematic Arts college along with the Change of Major/Minor form. And on being told what courses to take- his adviser did encourage him to take Calc 1 and Calc 2 but my son had a 5 on the AP BC Calc test and so tested out of them. Once he said Nope! the adviser dropped her suggestion.
EVERYBODY. Someone was interested in a Facebook group so I just created one with the same exact title as this thread, “USC Transfer Spring 2016 Admit.” If there’s any ambiguity, it was created by some handsome guy called Ross . . .
