USC Spring 2018 Admits

Hi! I found out yesterday that I was admitted for spring semester.
Anyone else in the same boat?

My D found out the same thing today. She’s possibly interested, but will need to see how the financial aid works out for spring.

@Wilson98 I see. Do you have any idea on how financial aid works? Like will we get notified later?

@kiloecho My son was a spring admit and got his financial aid at same time as fall admits.

I’m a spring admit!

Me! I just got my package in the mail! This def changes the chemistry of my decision but I guess we have until May 1!

oh… i guess i’m not getting any since i didnt hear of anything? :frowning: regardless, im pretty sure im going to usc!
Congrats to all admits! Do you guys know what youll guys do during fall semester? I may go to cc / study abroad.
I’m worried about social life though since ill be joining later in the year…

I was admitted for spring 2018, but thinking I’m going to defer until fall 2018. I skipped a grade when I was younger, so it will be nice to be with my age group again (won’t have to buy a fake id junior year, get to start college as an adult, etc.), and frankly a gap year in Europe and Australia sounds really fantastic

Also got into WashU, but I have 1/2 tuition at USC (ntnl merit), which means it is cheaper to spend a year traveling in Europe and then go to USC for 4 years than it is to go to WashU this fall. Also USC was always my #1  Fight on!

I’m thinking about taking classes at community college for a semester, but online if possible since I don’t have a car lol

I am a spring admit as well. Not sure if I should take this over UCSD (direct admit into CS)…

My D found out yesterday she got in to USC for Spring 2018. Does anyone know how many students typically make it off of the spring list and end up starting in the fall? She could be interested in studying abroad through a USC affiliated school for fall of this year but I’m wondering if she expresses that interest will that make her low priority for a spot that opens in the fall?

@anloubd My son was a Spring admit two years ago. There were about a dozen that were bumped to Fall. Calling them won’t help; I believe it really does have to do with space in the major. In some ways a Spring admission is a good thing since your child can take courses the summer and fall prior to USC possibly saving a lot of money and getting those GEs out of the way so they can concentrate on their major requirements when they start in the spring.

My D is also a Spring admit and pondering the options. A lot will depend on Financial Aid, which we have yet to receive.

Does spring admit just mean you were on the lower spectrum of admits? I’m curious because I still did get admitted to my first choice major…so it could be that or that my major is not competitive, right?

@sadsenior I think it means USC had a high volume of highly qualified applicants, like yourself!

I like to think about it this way: USC received ~56,000 applications, accepted ~9,000 for the fall semester, and presumably accepted ~500 for the spring semester. That means that spring admits are part of that lucky 17% that were accepted to USC, and out of all the applicants who were not accepted for the fall semester (~47,000), we are part of that lucky ONE PERCENT who managed to make it in anyway. Fight on!

I have been a periodic lurker on this site every since my D went through the admission cycle in 2012. I am always interested in the Spring admits because when she received an offer of Spring admission we were shocked and puzzled and here 5 years later, people still are unaware that when they apply to USC, spring admission is a possibility. I would have hoped they would do a better job of educating applicants but clearly nothing has changed.

In 2012 there apparently were more than usual bumps to fall because it was the first year they used the common app and their yield was less than anticipated. Her stats and ECs were as good as most who received fall admission offers. Just like the kids with 4.0 GPA and 35 on ACT that aren’t admitted at all, it’s impossible to figure what exactly they are looking for in a “holistic” setting.

She was committed to attending, even if it meant going in the Spring. We even flew out to admitted students day. It doesn’t seem that showing great interest matters either way. She was bumped to fall because there was an open spot. I do think that the major and school one has chosen does make a difference. She was undecided in Dornsife which probably had more openings than Marshall, Viterbi, etc.

In 2012, there was no option through USC to study abroad. I know if that was an option then, her decision would have been far easier because she would have jumped at the chance. Last thought, I have never seen or heard of someone who took the Spring admission offer and was unhappy with the outcome. Good luck with your decisions!

Spring admit here! I’m gonna try to figure out how to enroll in a community college ASAP haha. Don’t wanna be too idle in fall semester!
Some info that y’all might find helpful: financial aid office tweeted that financial aid estimates would be available beginning Mar. 28, and supposedly housing applications for spring admits open up June 30.
And after some stalking on older threads, it appears that if you DO happen to get bumped up to fall semester, you’ll find out about that in early May!

A question for you guys though: were you able to register for Explore USC for spring admits? I’m on the portal right now and so far the only admitted student events that I have the option of registering for are Off-Campus Admitted Student programs, and Admitted Student Day?

Congrats! Our D was a spring transfer admit in 1/2010. She’s a happy USC alum. The things that were helpful for her were that she took classes at the local CC with USC’s approval which applied toward her degree and her friends started in August so they could give her the inside scoop when we visited S for Oct Parent’s Weekend.
