if you want to be a dentist in SoCal, USC is THE place to go. it seems like every dentist in the area went to USC and they have a strong network together

Our home is in Georgia. Prestige is a matter of opinion. I disagree that you can receive a better education at Emory. In US News on the undergraduate reputation index Emory and USC are ranked exactly the same. USC has a higher freshmen retention rate, is more selective, has more students in the top 10% of their class, has much higher number of National Merit Scholars, is much more diverse economically and ethnically, has a lower acceptance rate and a much higher alumni giving rank.
If you can save that much money-which will be needed for dental school- my suggestion is go to SC where your dental preparation will be excellent. If you take advantage of Freshmen Science Honors and the many research opportunities available you will be challenged academically. The large numbers of international students and talented and creative peers from SC’s top notch art schools will enhance your college experience.
At Emory you will be in Decatur, not Atlanta. SC is right in the center of a vibrant city where all sorts outdoor events occur all year. The campus on Catalina Island will be a great get away for a scuba or sailing weekend.

USC’s dental school received a $35 million dollar gift from Dr. Herman Ostrow.

Doing your undergrad at SC is no guarantee for admission to the dental school. In my class when I attended dental school, there were quite a few students who did their undergrad at SC. Whether you plan to live in Southern California or not, USC’s dental school is excellent and will prepare you well for your chosen field.
The great thing about attending dental school at SC is the fact that the dental school is on the main campus vs the medical school which.

Dental School is expensive, think of the total overall burden for undergrad and grad school. USC starts you out in a $60K stronger position.

Prestige is a matter of personal preference and with a few notable exceptions tends to be related to proximity. Around Atlanta I suspect Emory is definitely “more prestigious”, around LA, USC would win that battle.

You feel you might get a better education at Emory - again a matter of personal perception. Undergraduate Chemistry is the same everywhere, spending and extra $60K on something you feelmight be the case seems excessive given your current family financial situation.

It’s fine to want to go to Emory, but so far you haven’t presented a very compelling (i.e., something worth spending $60K extra for) argument.

Facts place USC at same or higher level in the academic performance category. I suppose one might say a smaller school by defenition is more prestigeous. But prestige also has to do with how well-known a school is (it’s one factor anyway) and USC blows away Emory in terms of what segment of the US pop. knows about the school. Emory’s a great school, and D considered it. But at $60k less…you have to strongly consider attending USC.

Threads like this are why I do my best to stay out of the “vs” threads, but I accidentally stumbled in. Having read undertakers1664’s posts in this thread I find myself rooting very heavily for Emory in this case.
