I plan on pursuing in biotechnology in the future. Thus, two schools are actually fine for me academically, although USC might be slightly better since its engineering school is pretty strong.

However.......

USC: Too far away (I live in NY)
A TRUE campus, though =]

NYU: Really close to home, but it's more expensive.
No campus :( But city life is actually fine for me.

hmm. it really depends. ive visited both, and USC has some of the strongest school spirit ive ever seen. However its impossible to get around if you want to go off campus, and Downtown LA isn’t the best college town. The people there were much more serious about academics than I thought.

NYU is more intellectual, and the people are very mature for the most part. But then again it is very hard to focus, since you are in the village. NYU is thought to be selective overall, but that is a misconception. Stern and Tisch are the hardest, and the other schools are not as popular.

Overall, id go with USC, because it has all you need from a college. A campus, school spirit, good academics, and access to a giant city.

Which school will be more “prestigious” or “well-known” than the other in the future? Because my family is currently encouraging me to attend NYU because it has a better reputation internationally…(and of course, it’s close to home.)

I think NYU has a better reputation abroad, but in USA the two are very close, actually USC probably has a better reputation. Honestly the two are so close you have to visit. If USC is less expensive I would pick USC but that’s just me. I’m not a huge fan of the city so I wouldn’t want to go NYU, but that’s my opinion.

NYU has a stronger reputation than USC on the East Coast, USC has a stronger reputation than NYU on the West Coast. I think you should make your decision based on where you want to settle afterwards. And USC isn’t in Pasadena.

I go to school and live right next to USC and now I transferred to NYU and I prefer NYU only because of the endless possibilities but USC gives you a sense of the “college life.” They are also known around the US. One thing I really dislike about NYU is the campus. You really don’t get the college vibe because everyone is doing their own thing unlike USC where it is a large community.

how about if I want to do something like “biochemical engineering”? Does USC give students a lot of opportunities in research of internships in this field?

im in the same position as you except my major is different
usc gives more financial aid and is prob cheaper and since you live in ny, living in ghetto LA might be a big change and will let you out of your comfort zone
try something different.
for me i live near LA, so nyu is a big attraction for me and the endless internship opportunities they have in new york
but LA has many opportunities for internships.
USC has great alumni connection and the faculty really cares about their students and encourage them to work beyond the classroom, unliike nyu

Definitely USC. I have a sister who goes to USC and a friend who goes to NYU. My sister loves USC. It has one of the nation’s most prestigious academic programs as well as one of the most prestigious athletic programs, both which bring great pride to USC students. It’s campus is beautiful although it is in the middle of a not so good neighborhood, a 5 minute drive can get you to one of the hottest spots in LA. Weather is great all year long. My friend who goes to NYU really wants to transfer because the students there are in cliques and it doesn’t feel like college life. If I were you’ I’d definitely go to USC.

Oops, forgot to mention that USC is more prestigious. If you are going to be going international with your future job, USC is the way to go because it is much more well-known than NYU as a prestigious university. USC has come a long way the past two decades and with constant alumni support, I won’t be surprised to see USC edge closer to IVY league schools in a couple years. USC was also the second most desired college by high school students in the US.
But make sure you choose the college that you feel more comfortable going. If you think you are going to get homesick easily, stay in New York. If you’re an adventurous person, then think about going to USC. Trust me, you won’t regret it at all.

PS From my experience, USC has one of the most beautiful people I have seen on college campuses. You will see people of every race (mainly white, Korean and Japanese) who have stunning looks. Just letting you know if you’re planning on dating. The beaches near USC like Santa Monica, Huntington Beach etc. are great. Newport and Laguna Beach are only about an hour drive.
