Usc Vs Ucsd

Hi.

I am an Econ major student in a CC. I'm gonna apply for UCs this Nov. But I am also thinking about some pravite univs.

So, will u guys also apply for any pravite? If so, what r ur choices?

I am thinking about USC. But I check the Ranking the for Econ major, UCSD ranked 10th while USC ranked 40th+. But for the univ as a whole, USC has a better ranking. So, is there really any difference between those two (besides $$$$)? Do u guys think I should apply USC even it has a lower ranking than UCSD?

Thx

You plan on getting Masters in Econ?

If not, any will do fine for you.

No. Probabaly find a job and just get to a MBA.

rankings are usually for graduate departments

lets not talk about rankings and just go simply based on where you would have a better undergrad experience and more options in case you didnt want to do ECON....... USC> UCSD

USC GREATLY outranks UCSD in that respect. You might end up wanting to do accounting, or business, or finance, all of these things UCSD does NOT offer.

USC is much much much much better for internships in the field of business and for getting the type of job experience needed to get an MBA.

USC-stronger name, alumni, overall school
UCSD gets overlooked because overall it is not as good (however their econ program is top of the nation)

For me it would be a no brainer, USC; and yes its more expensive, totally worth it imo

If your not planning on going to grad school then USC is the obvious choice. Otherwise you should go with UCSD to save some cash till grad school

Thx, all of u.

① Is it the fact that once u get into USC, it's easy to change major? What i am thinking is, since the Econ major in not as competitive as Marshall, can I apply as an Econ major first. Then, once i got there, i can swith to Marshall? or I should try Marshall at first? I think my GPA will probably around 3.9. Is that ok for Marshall?

② I heard that it's hard to find any intership in SD as an Econ/Biz major. Is that right? Any SD men want to defend this?

3.9 is very competitive for Marshall. Good luck.

That "Econ/Biz" major does not exist at UCSD. They have three majors in their economics department, those being: Economics, Management Science, and Mathematics-Economics. Management Science is probably most closely related to "Econ/Biz."

I can tell you that I was accepted to UCSD under that major right now and through my research, it doesn't seem like internships or any such opportunities like that were popular for the major. Even at their transfer admit day, the economics department discussion and the career center discussion really couldn't handle the questions regarding internships for those interested in the finance or business field (or anything related).

Again, considering everything I've heard, I'm shying away from UCSD for that reason. I also know someone who graduated from UCSD with a management science major and now has trouble finding jobs. Then again, he got lazy and spent some time doing nothing after college so that hurts his job chances.

It now looks like I will be attending UCLA as a Math-Econ major, and that's largely influenced by the internship opportunities, "more networking," and the reputation of the name (if there's any large difference between UCLA's and UCSD's).

USC definately

think about the area that UCSD is in, we are talking about San Diego, which is big on medicine, biomedical research and the like. It does not have the same opportunaties in the field of business , especially for UCSD students, that is not what UCSD has going for it, it has a big pre med community with lots of oportunaties for those type of internships.

If you went to SDSU for example to major in business- you would get more opportunaties but not as much as LA

warrior,
oh, i see my mistake. the Biz/Econ there, well, i just want to say business or econ fields. but thanks for remind me.

USC, you will probably find more connections than UCSD since USC is a private university. UCSD is among the top econ programs in the US especially econometric. Also USC would cost more to go to. and usually people get either a PhD or BA for econ. I am just listing it for you. Hope that helps.

comehere,
thanks for the info! yup, their econometric ranked the 2nd! Sometimes, i am really shocked why SD will have such good rankings in lots of Econ fields?

It seems that i don't really want to get a PhD in Econ. So I should choice USC, a univ will give me a better chance in work market than UCSD, a univ that has a higher ranked econ department, right? :D

Without a doubt.

if your interest is more about business side of things rather than getting a PHD in econ or being prepared for Phd work in econ, then chose USC.

You have to consider that you might want to take accounting/finance and the like instead of just doing hardcore Econ- which by the way is not the same as business AT ALL. Being prepped for econ grad work is great if that is what you want to do.... you want a job however, so econ grad school is not exactly your top priority.

All the UCs are better at prepping for econ gradwork than for business related work experience post graduation.

I would choose USC... everybody at my CC goes to UCSD... way too easy.. I have not seen a single rejection from SD!

I would choose USC to bears. And I agree with Torrance about how easy UCSD admission is.

yup. It is wierd.
I think UCSD is hard for freshmen. we have to work hard in high school to get into. How come it is that easy for transfer? hmmmm...

The fact that San Diego isn't housing transfer students might play a large role... they have a limited number of freshman dorms so they have to keep that number down.
