USC's Dr. Castells Awarded Balzan Prize

<p>One of the most cited scholars in the field of communications is Dr. Manuel Castells. He has a long list of honors and awards. It was just announced Dr. Castells has won the 2013 Balzan Prize for Sociology. This prize includes a sum of around $800,000. Last year Professor Castells was awarded the Holberg International Memorial Prize, another highly prestigious honor.</p>

<p>Dr. Castells has many other awards including the Erasmus Medal, Guggenheim Fellowship and has been knighted by France, Portugal, Finland and Catalonia.</p>

<p>University Professor Castells holds the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Communications, Technology and Society in the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.</p>

<p>Later this year he will receive the award in Berne, Switzerland.</p>

<p>Dr. Castells is the most cited communication scholar in the world. The Holberg Prize which he received last year is given for "outstanding scholarly work in arts and humanities, social science, law and theology. The prize committee called Dr. Castells “the leading sociologist of the city and new information and media technologies”.</p>

<p>The Holberg Prize carries a monetary award of $775,000.</p>
