Use extra CA essay to clarify something?

I have an internship at a lab, and the situation is quite a bit more complicated than just “being an internship.” I have the normal internship time where I get to leave school early. However, my lab supervisor decided to start paying me so that I could stay longer in the evening and be the “lab assistant” where I can do tasks for other people. That’s when I clock in. When I’m not clocked in, I’m doing stuff solely for my own learning.
To make it more complicated, my school does trimesters, and next week when the trimester ends I’m going to be switching to only paid work 2 days a week since I won’t be able to come until 3 pm, dedicated only to helping one grad student with his work.

TLDR; do I use the common app’s “additional information” space to clarify this? Out of an abundance of caution, I just want to make sure my situation is crystal clear since
A) my lab supervisor is writing me a rec letter and I want everything to line up
B) my school internship is not actually supposed to be paid, so I need it to be clear that about half of my time there was unpaid
C) I do think it’s pretty cool that I’m being paid to do work with a grad student and I’m proud of how far I’ve come in this lab. I think it would be beneficial to show off some of that work. But I can’t if all they know about this is the 150-character activity.

My clarification would be succinct and I think pretty clear. Would this still be just too much unnecessary stuff for them to read?

Thank you so much anybody!!

That’s more detail that colleges want or need. What they want to know is what you accomplished, not the mechanics of punching a time clock.

noted! I think I’ll just enter it as the paid portion only. Even though I’m kind of lacking in volunteer stuff… oh well. I think this outweighs having one more community service thing

That’s good, because the unpaid part does not count as volunteering.

Hmmmm…why not?

In terms of college admissions, volunteering means working for the betterment of the community - homeless outreach, hospital work, etc. Simply working for free does not count. It’s still a valid activity, but it’s not volunteering for admissions purposes.

I agree with @skieurope. An unpaid internship is not volunteering. Since you are also being paid for essentially the same tasks I’d leave it at that.

Would you categorize it as “Work (paid)” or “Internship” in the drop-down choice for the activity type?

Internship.

thank you for all your help!! :relaxed:
