S, a finalist, only ranked Stanford for initial match--waiting for results. If not matched will be applying to other QB schools including very selective ones. Is it better to apply though QB regular decision process or to apply directly to the schools? SAT: 800; 710; 720

CollegeStan, I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t use the QB application; your son has already done all the extra work! My son’s experience is that it can make a difference. Last year at this time we too were waiting on the match, trying to remember how long the odds are, and with a back up QB list that seemed so ambitious – but we had no doubts about the advantages of using Questbridge.
My son was not matched, but did get into all 3 Ivies he applied to regular decision using his QB application and is a very happy freshman at Yale. QB is definitely on our list of things to be thankful for!

Thanks for the info. Congratulations to your son! We’ll be using QB to apply for regular admission as well.

But do they just use the QB app as “supplemental” and still submit the Common App and the school’s supplemental?

^I am not sure. I have the same question as well because my common application essay is the same that I used for Questbridge Bio.

I’m wondering if it is required to use the QB app in order to receive the fee waiver. I don’t think so, but not certain.

It does look like the correct process is on the QB site if you link to the specific college you want to apply to. I haven’t checked though to see if although you can forward the QB app, if it is ok (if not required) to go ahead and submit common and supplemental.

It depends on the individual college whether you need the common app, supplement and/or QB app, so you need to check each school’s listed requirements. Most of the schools my son applied to required all three; QB will forward their app to all the schools you request in “My Locker.”

To get the fee waiver with the Common App, most schools tell you to check the “Other” box under fee waiver and write in “QuestBridge finalist.”

My son reused his QB essays in the Common App, and that worked out well for him.

My question is this.
Say you match with non-binding Yale and binding Columbia. Yale being choice 1, Columbia being 2.
Will you be legally bound to go to Columbia or can you choose your first option (Yale)

Also, I don’t understand how one can apply EA to multiple colleges. Say you get accepted into more than one through EA, then what?!

You will not be matched to more than one school. So if you are matched with Yale, then you can decide whether or not to attend Yale. You will have to (re) apply to Columbia separately through RD.

EA only means early acceptance. There is no commitment to attend.
ED means early decision and you can only apply to one school (or must rescind all other applications if accepted). If you are accepted, you “must” attend the ED school.

Know this is late but…my daughter was not matched. However, she applied RD through Questbridge. She was an early write to Swarthmore (her dream school) and accepted by Amherst as well (both full scholarship). She is now a very happy junior (taking a few classes at UPenn as well) and mentoring two freshmen QB students. Pay it forward!! In her, and my, opinion, QB was a huge push in her being accepted and we are both very grateful!

tsprite, this is a pretty specific question, but do you remember if your daughter had to send a physical copy of her transcript to Amherst? Their RD information on Questbridge says to send a transcript but not an online Common App, can you send an online transcript via Common App?

How will colleges know whether I am a QuestBridge finalist or not? Aside from Yale, all the QuestBridge-partnered colleges do not have a text box next to the payment option, so there was no way for me to indicate that I am a QuestBridge finalist. I, however, did mentioned in my common app that I am a finalist in the Honors section under Academics. Will that suffice? Or should I email/ call each individual colleges to verify?

Thanks

Hi! I understand your confusion, so here’s how the College Match works:
- You can rank up to 8 of Questbridge’s partner schools that you’d like to apply EA/ED to.

QB will forward your application and already submitted materials to those schools.

You submit any supplementary materials necessary by (in this year’s case, and I’m sure it’s probably been the same for the past years, as it’s the typical ED/EA date) November 1st.

Your colleges review all the applications sent to them by finalists, then ‘rank’ the applicants they would be willing to offer the full College Match Scholarship to.

Even if you are ranked by more than one school, it is not a legal issue in this case. The partner colleges only apply the legally binding ED guidelines if you are matched with them. Questbridge determines which college you are matched with based on how you ranked your schools. I’ll use your example, cb1267: Say that you ranked Yale #1 and Columbia #2, and they both ranked you. Questbridge would match you with Yale because you ranked that one higher on your list.

I hope that clears things up! I was a finalist who wasn’t matched, so I’m pretty familiar with the process. ^^

Drop the word “legal” in college applications issues. Think “honor system” instead.
