Used wrong Social Security #..

Hi so I applied to both Ohio State and Northwestern using CommonApp, Minnesota, and College of Dupage (community college) using the wrong social security #. My dad filled out the FAFSA for me and I saw the # that he used (which I know is correct) is 2 digits off the one I used for all my apps. I've already been accepted into Ohio State, Minnesota, and CoD. What should I do?

Sounds like you need to contact your schools with a correction.

i’m emailing CoD right now. Do I need to email CommonApp or the individual schools?

I would email each school, include whatever school ID number they assigned to you, provide the correct SSN, and ask for a confirmation email response that the correction was made.

e-mail the individual schools.

i just dont like emailing my entire ss#, i’ll just tell them the digits that need to be corrected

You could still end up screwed up… I would just email the whole thing. If college admissions was full of people who stole identities, all students would be toast.

that’s true.

wow… I registered for the draft with that wrong SSN too…

^ I am astonished by this. Probably because of 20+ years in the military so at this point it is part and parcel to my identity. Make sure you memorize it now. You’ll need it for the decades of income tax forms you’ll fill out.

My S did not have his SSN memorized when he filled out college apps, and he asked me for it. I wrote it down wrong - and he applied with the wrong SSN. He had to contact each school, and they all had different requirements. One school wanted a copy of his SS card to change it.

Did you complete your FAFSA incorrectly? If so, you will also need to call each school’s financial aid office to tell them. Ask them what they want you to do. I work in finaid, and I require a SS card to fix the SSN for a filed FAFSA … I do not want the student to correct the FAFSA, as this causes problems down the road. Each school has its own preferences. If one says fix the SSN on the FAFSA and another tells you not to, make sure you remove the school number for the school that doesn’t want you to change it when you make the FAFSA change.
