USF vs. LMU vs. Syracuse University - business + music/acting

Hey everyone!! First of all, thanks in advance for helping me out with this decision and providing some new perspective. I’m really stuck between two schools and with the deadline coming up in a few days, my brain feels like it’s been kinda frozen. Let me first be super honest and vulnerable with you all; in terms of my career, there’s honestly nothing I want to do more than act professionally and become a professional musical artist. It’s been my dream and passion since I was young and I would do anything to continue making strides towards something I could never get sick of doing. It might be unrealistic to make a career out of it, as I completely understand that both those industries are extremely oversaturated, but I’d rather try and fail instead of living with the regret of “what if?”

Anyway, whilst discussing with my parents, we all agreed that I should tackle my dreams and my regular career separately, doing both acting and music-making on my own time and studying a more common career path in college as a “backup.” For a little background, I’ve been in my school’s International Business Program from my sophomore year to my senior year in high school and will be pursuing business at either Loyola Marymount, University of San Francisco, or Syracuse University. I’m pretty interested in the hospitality, real estate, and entertainment law side of the business industry (which may change), but again, there’s nothing I’m truly as passionate about as both music and acting.

At LMU, I was accepted into their school of business, but I’ve entered as an undecided business major. I absolutely love Loyola’s location and weather as I’m a California native and I realize that a lot of opportunities lie in the LA area for both acting and music, which would allow me the chance to further my personal goals (I hope). I was very lucky to visit the campus, which is very beautiful. All in all, it reminds me of home.

At USF, I was accepted as a Management major in their School of Management. I haven’t had the chance to visit the school, but I did go to San Francisco when I was younger and I absolutely loved it. I took a few virtual tours of the school and was totally awe-struck. I believe there are a lot of arising opportunities in the San Franciso area as well in regards to both music and acting.

At Syracuse, I was accepted into their Bandier Program (Recording and Allied Industries) at the Newhouse School of Public Communications, which - for those who may not know - teaches music business and the essentials of the music industry. I was extremely lucky to visit the school and I fell in love with the campus. From what I’ve heard, the thought of going through a winter there does give me a medium-scale heart attack, but I would be willing to endure it. It’s a nice change of pace from California and - to me - just felt more like the college experience.

I want to quickly clarify that regardless of location, nothing will stop me from acting and making music, but I do think that the place I’m at could be a big factor in regards to what opportunities I may be presented with.

I feel like I would be happy at either school, but I need some outside perspective to maybe catch things I’m not taking into account, provide me with some knowledge from experience, correct me if I’m wrong on something I stated here, or anything else. I’m so sorry for making this so lengthy, but I wanted to give you guys a full overview of my goals and aspirations, my plans, my likes and dislikes, etc. so I can make a well-informed decision that would benefit me the most. Please feel free to offer any opinions, tips, or advice, and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. Again, thank you guys so much for reading this whole autobiography and helping me out. I really appreciate it.

What are the financials ? Which is costing most - in other words. I’m sure all colleges put on “shows” so you can act and it depends on if the Syracuse program fits with your desires - as you mention hospitality, etc…

I’d say SU, LMU, then USF - but it depends on financials and which program is giving you the exposure to areas you want.

btw - Winters are overrated - we used to go to classes in boxers back in the 80s- when you can do such thing. You’ll be fine.

For sure. As for financials, SU, LMU, and USF are around the $45,000-$50,000 range for my first year (scholarship money included).

SU would be the most expensive, LMU would be in the middle ($47,000 ish), and USF would be the least expensive. If I were to live off-campus after my freshman year, the costs would decrease, but the cost of rent would likely vary in each location.

Thanks again!

I would think hard about Syracuse. It is a smaller, more isolated town that the other choices. The school is known and highly ranked for musical theater and acting majors. Those are auditioned majors and I suspect many on campus music and acting opportunities go them either because those kids are better or because there is a rule to that effect. So you might have limited on campus extracurricular music and acting chances. Off campus is going to be more limited (small city) and saturated with the BFA folks also, I would think. Much better out of school training in LA and SF. I could be wrong, but really look into it if you are planning on getting all your acting and singing outside of class. Also. Cold and snow. Think of it this way, for all but a couple of months of school your toes, heels AND ankles will be covered with not only footwear but also also wool socks. By necessity! You will own more boots than flip flops. Snow boots, not cute “booties.” People in NY call flip flops “shower shoes” because that is where they get worn. If you love LMU and it feels like home, SU had better be a million times better choice for you to endure that.
