I was wondering if it was absolutely necessary to buy Microsoft Office going into Emory or could I just use Open Office. I am planning on majoring in economics so I was thinking that I probably would have to buy Microsoft Office, but any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

IggTron7, i believe the Microsoft Office Suite will be available for you to download at no cost at emory. Oxford students get these software for free so I would expect the same for Emory CAS students.

Generally, it won’t really matter. You can always save OpenOffice files as .doc/.dox extension. (I use IBM Lotus 3 Beta 2 and I have no problem with comparability issues.)

I am unsure if there are any offers for OSX, however.

But I would suggest saving your money and use Open Office for word processing and then converting it to .doc. If you must use Word or Powerpoint, there are plenty of computers around the campus that has Office for your use.
