Using Open Office Instead of Microsoft Office

Hello,

I was wondering if it was absolutely necessary to buy Microsoft Office going into Emory or could I just use Open Office. I am planning on majoring in economics so I was thinking that I probably would have to buy Microsoft Office, but any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

IggTron7, i believe the Microsoft Office Suite will be available for you to download at no cost at emory. Oxford students get these software for free so I would expect the same for Emory CAS students.

Generally, it won’t really matter. You can always save OpenOffice files as .doc/.dox extension. (I use IBM Lotus 3 Beta 2 and I have no problem with comparability issues.)

Unfortunately that’s not the case right now:

[Software Distribution: Emory’s Microsoft Campus Agreement (MSCA)](http://it.emory.edu/showdoc.cfm?docid=5571)

Thanks. Do you know if Emory at least offers discounted software to students?

thanks for pointing it out collegestu816. I planned on sticking to my IBM Lotus 3 anyways :)

If you have a PC, the Microsoft Office Professional Academic Edition can be bought for $80 at [Microsoft Office Professional Academic 2010](http://www.microsoft.com/student/office/en-us/default.aspx)

I am unsure if there are any offers for OSX, however.

But I would suggest saving your money and use Open Office for word processing and then converting it to .doc. If you must use Word or Powerpoint, there are plenty of computers around the campus that has Office for your use.
