USNA Sports

Is anyone interested in playing any sports down at the yard? I'm going to run for Navy for the next 4 years. I was recruited by the coach. I run a 4:33 mile and I'm a 1:58 800 guy.

cripes...If I had considered doing that, I probably could have been recruited last year!!

I ran a 4:25 mile, a 1:57 800, and a 52 400 (20 min. after running a 4:30 mile one meet).

I sent in the athletic questionaire a couple times, but never got contacted or any kind of response.

what kind of hurdle times(both 110 and 400ih) would the coach look for or consider giving help to?

I run a 52 also. Are you at the Academy now? If not, you don't have to be recruited to get on the team. After the second day of plebe summer, we will all have the opportunity to meet with the coaches and teams for which we want to compete for. The coach said anyone under 2:00 for the 800m is a good bet for the team.

I would say around 16.2 and 57ish. You should look at some of the improvements made by some midshipmen over their four years on the team. Once kid is only a junior and he came in with a 2:06 800 and now he's running a 1:54. Those coaches are incredible.

thanks for the info

Cooksey and Cantello are excellent coaches. The best time to make a team is Plebe year so that you can sit T tables. If you're a decent runner, you've got xc, indoor and outdoor track.

Best of Luck.

I had my coach e-mail the women's xc and track coach, and she responded with some interest. I've been keeping up with other e-mails to them as well. I run a 2:16 800m, a 5:10 mile, a 10:20 3000m. My XC 5k time is 18:48. I'm hoping my times are good enough for Navy...

Any runners here headed to Penn Relays next week?

DAMN!!!!! 4:30's for a mile is freakish!! Are you guys tall, short, big, small??? wow

5'9" 155 lbs.

No, i'm not at the academy...but i will be this summer. I'm currently in NROTC at the UW in Seattle.

Planning on water polo, swimming, or sailing team

Definately trying soccer, and if i dont get that, maybe lax, but they are really good, and probably sailing or crew as backups, i definately want to play a varsity sport

Yeah, I'm gonna be in the 4X4. Those are some very good women's times. You'll def. make it on the team.

Good Luck to everyone that will be heading to the Academy here in the summer. I started on the Track team, but due to a torn medial meniscus, I had to leave the team. I am now playing Sprint football. I do recommend that you pick a sport that you love to do and stick with it. It'll make the summer go by so much faster. If you have any question, please feel free to ask. If I don't have an answer, I'll try and find someone here that does.

What about the Combat Arms Team? I've been looking at their website, and the roster doesn't include any Plebes. Am I correct in assuming that it's for upperclass only?

SpiderMD, when my son did his visit, he met a "cool" guy from TX who's on the Sprint Football team. Wonder if it was you.

Can you talk a little about the Sprint FB team, how hard it is to make it, etc.

DMeix- The combat arms team is very selective... A couple of guys in my company tried out for it this semester. The tryouts include a PFT then quite a few series of shooting rounds. They were only able to take 4 of the usual 8 plebe members this year due to funding. That is what I was told. You can only try out as a plebe. So once you're on it... you're ON it. If you need any more information, just let me know and I’ll go hunting for ya.

Spidermom- first off, love the screen name. What company did your son stay with on his visit? As for Sprint, I absolutely love it. I played football in TX and would have enjoyed being able to play on the regular football team, but I am slightly smaller than most of those guys. So I tried out for the Sprint team. When we started Spring training, we had around 130 guys come out for the team... and were told that by the start of the season next year that we would need to be down around 50 or so. If you're son wants to play football, this is a team to be on. The Coach (Major Clearfield) is an amazing inspiration to me just about every day. I hope that answered any questions you had. Feel free to ask more.

Hehe, we must be relatives, SpiderMD :)

Philip was in Company 30. He's a pretty small guy, maybe 5'9", 140 pounds. He wrestled at 130 all year. I know he plans to lift and get bigger at NMMI next year. He's speedy.

If you played FB in TX, you must be awfully good. FB is, as you know, HUGE here. I'm still amazed at the indoor turf practice facility our HS has. The whole town turns out for every game.

I'm going to the academy to run track......but after NAPS
