UT Appeals Process

So I hadn't heard from UT regarding my transfer admission, so I called the admissions office today. After being handed off to about 5 people, I finally find out that my application had been closed due to the fact that my transcript never arrived. I went back and checked the date of when I mailed my transcript from ACC. It was on January 18th! Two months before the deadline. In all this time UT never bothered to inform me of this.

So I've sent in an extremely apologetic letter and the receipt for my transcript (with the date circled in red) for the appeals process. But I've heard from multiple people that the appeals process is a last resort and my application will probably not get changed.

Does anyone have any recommendations for what I can do? I'm just not sure how my application should have been denied because a letter got lost in the mail. I just don't see what I could have done about it since no one notified me I was missing a transcript.

after the fact I realized this probably belongs in the admissions forum, but any help from you guys would be appreciated.

Take it to court

I’ve heard of this happening with the University of Texas (I assume that’s the UT you mean) a couple of times but instead with losing students SAT scores. Neither of the 2 students heard about it until late April when they got a postcard saying basically “We’re bummed you never finished your application at UT, but we’re sure it was just because you picked somewhere else!”

It’s ridiculous, they didn’t send me an email about it until three hours after I called…coincidence? I think not.

If it was a private school, I would just go to another school if the top administration/leadership refused to intervene to correct their own error - I would not want to be a part of such a school. However, since this is a public school, and if you are a Texas resident, you should take advantage of every option you have to fight this (if they end up forcing you to fight it) and hold them accountable through whatever legal, political, or media means you can use.

Which UT??

Appeals is sort of a weird word since this isn’t a legal process - I mail them a letter with proof that they made a mistake and basically beg them to reconsider. In this case it was the receipt that I mailed my transcript on January 18th (the deadline was March 1st, so my transcript had almost three months to travel the two blocks from my dorm to UT).

And this entire process has made me re-think going to UT Austin. They didn’t even care enough in the past four months to tell me (through email, letter, or my ut eid site) that my application was closed, and I highly doubt they ever would have if I hadn’t called. The worst part is when I talk to admissions staff they have this attitude that the entire problem could have been prevented if only I’d called sooner - which I would have loved to, only of course I didn’t, because how was I supposed to know there was a problem? I’m not psychic.

Unfortunately, this is a widespread problem throughout the education system - corruption, incompetency, and apathy towards students. It will be difficult to find another university that does not have the same problems you are encountering. However, if you are a Texas resident, you have already paid for UT even without yet going there, and if they reject your appeal, you’re not getting the public service for which you paid with taxes, time, and effort. Unless you have another equally strong opportunity elsewhere, I wouldn’t just walk away if they reject your appeal - if you have any other options to fight the decision.

I have other opportunities, but none of them as convenient or in as good of a city as UT. It bums me out that I continually have bad luck with them despite good grades and an impressive enough application. I didn’t get in when I applied in high school because I wasn’t top 10% at my school - even though I had a 3.8 (my school was extremely small and competitive, so the top 10% was only 17 kids and they all had 4.0’s.)
