Hello parents, my 18 YO daughter is a freshman at UT Austin and is currently deciding where to live next year. Her preference would be a studio or 1 bedroom as she has decided she would prefer to live alone, but she will consider roommate matching as long as she doesn’t have to share a room. My concerns are primarily for safety, with price running a close second. We have another daughter who is a junior at another university so we are feeling the pinch of the high cost of education. If anyone has recommendations of decent, safe apartments near UT (preferably West Campus) that aren’t outrageously expensive (under $1k/month), I’d love to hear about them. Thank you in advance!
I am not real familiar with West Campus but from what I have heard it will be hard to get a 1 bedroom apt for $1000. She could get a bedroom in a multibedroom apt for that. You might want to check the coops for that. I know my niece lived in a coop, possible 21st St Coop, and had a small studio that was very reasonable priced. It may be safer too because you tend to know everybody at a coop and they look after each other. If you get away from campus, you can find one bedroom apts. for less than $1000 and probably in safer neighborhoods. I’m thinking Far West and Mopac area and they do have UT shuttle buses running. My daughter’s roommate is a UT student and they live at Burnet and North Loop at the Kensington Green which has 1 bedrooms apts. right around $1000 including utilities. They catch the rapid ride Metro bus with the bus stop right there. Again, safe neighborhood and lots of restaurants in the area. Hopefully, others might have some other suggestions for West Campus.
Not to discourage you but, we have had more than one student go through UT. I’ve never heard of a one bedroom apt. on West Campus at or under $1000 per month.
DS is renting a one bedroom on West Campus right now for just over $1400/ month. It is a larger unit but still, West Campus is pricey. Another DS rented a two bedroom unit north of Campus last year. It was an older finish out and still rented out at $1250/ month per bedroom.
Personal safety wasn’t an issue in either location. They did see their bikes stolen though, north of campus.
Good luck to you!
I think that she will need to find a roommate situation. My daughter (a grad student) lives north of campus in a one bedroom for $1400.
Thank you all for the advice. We have seen a few online, but the less expensive ones look very old and I’m worried about the safety of the locations. She has called a few that were advertised as less expensive but those were for immediate occupancy–price will go up for next school year. She may just have to get used to the idea of having roommates throughout college. Thanks again!
