Hey guys, I got Capped and was curious if appealing would change the decision. I struggled with depression and family issues my junior year which really had an effect on my grades. Would appealing help my cause? And what other materials should I consider submitting with the appeal? Thanks
in your appeal add new info
PERHAPS A GPA CHANGE HAPPENED. TELL THEM IN THE APPEAL YOU WANT TO BE LOOKED AT FOR UNDECIDED (easiest major) to transfer into.
Also elaborate on how much you love ut and want to be here. AGAIN ADDDD LOTS OF NEW INFO.
PERHAPS AWRADS OR CLUBS YOU JOINED.
VOLUNTEER SERVICE
AND STATE THAT YOU ARE WILLING TO GO UNDECLARED BECAUSE OF HOW MUCH YOU WANT TO BE A LONGHORN,
I appealed twice but I moved from the top 8% to the top 5% I think that’s why I got accepted the second time but I am not 100% sure.
but a word of advice if you’re mccombs and you get in take Calc 1 and Calc 2 elsewhere. It’s killer in ut test out if you can.
If you’re pre-med taking ap chem and bio will help you. UT is hard as ##$$# but this place is amazing and I am lucky to be here. Excuse the grammar mistakes I am multitasking anyways I might not be able to reply fast enough just look up my past posts about appealing. Got to study good luck hook em and I hope you can join the 40 acres. Hook em.
BTW I was capped and appealed. And you an appeal rejections and majors. But be cautious the harder the major to get into the worse your chances are. If you will internal transfer make sure you know the prerequisites so you can do them in the summer registration is a b******. And those prerequisites are gpa killers.
Do you guys think it would be worth the time to appeal? The only leverage that I have is one out of two of my recommendation letters did not get received by UT and I grossly under-reported the amount of college credit I had earned through AP/DC on my ApplyTexas app. I am currently waitlisted and enrolled in PACE, but I feel like it’s worth a shot.
From another thread “How admission process works?”, I saw the documented guidelines to the admission. If not for anything, it gives some idea as to what UT is looking for.
Just providing it for people who have not seen it. Apparently they have Personal Achievement Index and Academic Index. I stumbled upon it couple of days ago and surprised cockrell looks at Math and Writing for calculating Academic Index. Generally schools take math and critical reading for that. Below are the formulas from the document. This might clarify something on how academic index is calculated. For personal achievement index, there is no such formula.
Business – ACT Model
-.630 + (HSR * .015) + (ACT M * .062) + (ACT EngComp * .031)
Business – SAT Model
-2.668 + (SAT M * .002) + (SAT W * .001) + (HSR * .032) + (SAT CR * .001)
Engineering – ACT Model
-1.661 + (ACT EngComp * .045) + (HSR * .020) + (ACT M * .060)
Engineering – SAT Model
-2.254 + (SAT W * .002) + (HSR * .023) + (SAT M * .003)
@135pipe Hey could i please read your appeal letter? I wanna make sure that i wrote mine properly. Also if i have everything in by next week, when will i hear back?
If you appeal, can you select that you are appealing to be admitted to your 2nd choice major? Also, would adding a resume and letter(s) of recommendation constitute a valid reason for appeal? Add in the fact that he would have preferred the 2nd choice major and should have switched the order.
@135pipe I was straight rejected. Is there still a chance I could be admitted with a good appeal? I suffered from a concussion the beginning of this year and another sickness right before final exams which could have changed my GPA or class rank. I also have new letters of recommendation! Would that be basis for a good appeal? Thank you!
Appeals decisions come in may. Anyone can appeal but it’s up to them if there is space and if you have new relevant info. I am sorry I don’t have the appeal anymore
@rach98n, I empathize with your son’s situation. I read your comment about top 1% and 35 MATH ACT score and thought “how can this be?” I cannot answer your question about why they did not seem to consider his second choice major.
More pieces of this strange puzzle are coming together for me - and tips for the students that apply next year.
Based on above comment, I am gathering that your son did not submit a resume OR letters of rec with his original application??
Also, during the long wait period between applying and getting results - why - if he had a change of heart about his first choice major - did he not log on and take the simple steps to change his first choice to Chemistry?
This is in the past for your son, but may be helpful for those applying next year that believe that all that optional stuff doesn’t matter - that it is all about class rank and test scores. It ALL matters. I absolutely believe they read your essays, resume and letters of rec.
The good news for your son is that CNS Chemistry is not nearly as competitive as some (Business, Engineering, CS) to internally transfer into at the end of freshman year (applications submitted March - May for following fall, acceptance during summer, fully in CNS Chem sophomore year.)
Freshman year he can take the same Chemistry classes and Calculus classes that those in CNS Chemistry major take. He will just need to pay attention to any credits required to apply for internal transfer and maintain a strong GPA. Undeclared UGS might be a good starting major - as this major is for exploring possible majors. He will want to build a relationship with his freshman adviser and be clear about goals for internal transfer.
I hope you hear that he can get in Chemistry for freshman year. Good luck!
I know this is kind of crazy but I applied to UT in early October and it was my third choice school. After I applied, I did not complete my supplemental information because I had already been accepted into Baylor, my second choice, and was waiting to hear back from A&M. About a week ago, I heard back from A&M and was not offered a full acceptance, and also decided that Baylor just wasn’t for me. Now, 5-6 months later (crazy I know), I realized that I had not completed my supplemental info and now my application is late. is there anything I can do or is it really just way too late? I really want to be at this school
@lots2do …thanks for the note! I agree, he did not submit the “extras” as we did not realize they would be that heavily considered. It is good advice not to rely on your test scores and class rank! As for not changing the major…he wasn’t 100% sure. He figured ChemE was a long shot, but he might as well try, thinking that if he got his 2nd choice he would be just as happy. I also agree that it’s not the end of the world to do UGS and transfer.
i am thankful i got in now that i see these people with WAY higher stats get rejected i have no idea how i got in, i was top 39% and got into cockrell for aerospace.
@me251123 @michaelite @DZhang526
1st choice: biomed
2nd choice: electrical
rank: top 10% but I am recalculating because I believe there is a mistake, which might take me up to 7-8%
SAT: 2260, 780 reading and math, 700 writing
ACT:33, don’t remember breakdown
SAT scores: 780 math II, some others but that’s the most significant one
AP: all 4s and 5s
4 year varsity swimmer
4 years of debate, 2 years of vice-president
made own non-profit organization (president)
2 years of science olympiad, secretary (1st), vice-president (2nd)
national commended scholar (1 point from semi-finalist)
national spanish exam bronze medalist
2 year all-state athlete
2 years science fair (fundraising officer)
5 years club swimming
worked as volunteer at camp invention (used spanish and english to teach underprivileged students in DISD)
research experience at UT AUSTIN (I’m mad about this especially, if you can’t tell), bio department, and have an ID that states I am faculty/staff—> lived on campus for 2 months last summer and I swam with UT for practice
however, I found out that even though I ordered them, my SAT subject scores and AP scores never got uploaded to my documents, so I assume they never got there. also, my gpa may be incorrect. my resume also never reached the campus as well. I think I’m going to reiterate that I stayed on campus and worked on research at UT as well. does this give me grounds for an appeal? I contacted my admissions counselor and he’s saying I should go through with PACE, which is frustrating because I was hoping he would answer my questions.
also, my parents are saying it’s my own fault for not checking and doing things properly, so I am very frustrated and upset because they’re stressing me out more.
If your GPA is incorrect, that’s a big deal and it might be grounds for a legitimate appeal. Did you read about the process? You’ll need to answer questions such as “Who was responsible for the error?” and “When did you realize there was a mistake?” Check this website for info about the appeal process. Good luck!

@snowchocolate The SAT subject tests are not showing as reached for all applicants. But if you sent them, they got them. I think same goes for AP. But you could make the incorrect GPA the basis for your appeal. And it might work.
Supposedly they’ve been rejecting students with high stats because they don’t want UT to be a extreme school with a bunch of students with 4.0’s and 2400’s, they’re trying to add diversity to campus not only race wise but also through academics.
They denied me into Biochem but I’m definitely appealing, I think all of y’all’s best bet is to just appeal.
@michaelite that makes more sense, but I’m not sure if I can get my official GPA to change, because the people who calculate might not change it. in my school, they are pretty lazy. misplaced transcripts during college apps are pretty common. any advice? should I just prove that it changed to the appeals board?
@snowchocolate I have no idea
@snowchocolate I understand why you didn’t get into biomedical( insanely hard to get into), but electrical should have been more than a match for you. I think you have grounds for appeal involving your GPA. Also, research experience at the school you apply to isn’t that big of a deal for whatever reason.
@vs1997 I think essays are a huge draw for UT, I got into electrical at Cockrell with a top 16 percent, and my friend got into Business Unspecified at McCoumbs from the top 35 percent.
