UT Austin Appeals

@snowchocolate‌ when you appeal, specifically request them to consider you for electrical engineering (biomedE is too small a major and very difficult to get into).

This year UT only considered first choice majors. Many kids with very high stats (like you), great essays and EC’s who applied to very small departments like biomedE and chemE got waitlisted/paced as there was no space. Many seemed to be kids outside the top 7% at very competitive schools. I think some would have got into their second choice majors, but UT did not look at second choice this year (some exceptions of course like chemE first choice / petE second choice). It seems unfair that such strong academic students cannot be part of UT in their second choice majors. But, that’s how admissions worked this year.

You have great stats for ECE (which is a great choice at UT if you are interested in that major. Lots of great high paying internships). Wishing you all the best.

(UT does not consider AP scores and even SAT subject scores for admissions. They may look at them for Honors- don’t know).

Interesting point EventHorizon…I believe what you are saying that 2nd choices were not considered, however, I have emails and phone calls from admissions swearing that they did. However, son was able to “choose” his 2nd choice from a list after being denied his first choice and being told he was not given a major (if the 2nd choice was available to choose, why wasn’t it just assigned?). Very stressful time for us which now includes us seriously considering a different school.

2 calls to admissions . They said they did not consider second choice. They wanted to consider kids for what they truly wanted to major in - first choice only. Maybe a third call will say they did consider second choice.

Maybe Cockrell held applications till the last minute and CNS was not able to consider second majors. Those in the top 7% got to pick a second choice later, those outside just got waitlisted/paced. So this year PACE will have some very strong students all starting at ACC.

@EventHorizon32‌ thx for passing this along. But seriously: “They wanted to consider kids for what they truly wanted to major in - first choice only” --?? Has anyone informed admissions that these are 17 year olds? The majority of whom are going to change their major during college anyway?

So true. Guess it’s tough to change majors at UT and they want to discourage applying to an easy major and then transferring. But what if a kid is truly undecided? Guess they should select a different University that has more of an open policy.

UT is a top choice for so many in TX and there are definitely space issues.

@EventHorizon32
I was accepted into my second choice major… First choice was ChemE, Second choice was PetE.
Initially I thought this was weird because historically PetE was more difficult to get into (according to transfer-in stats etc.).
Originally when I applied I had PetE as my first choice and ChemE as my second choice. Sometime before the application deadline I requested a change of major on MyStatus to switch my first and second choice majors. On MyStatus it seemed as though the request processed completely, but I am questioning this now because of your post. I want to go into ChemE but was just happy at the moment to be accepted into Cockrell. If your assertion is correct that only first choice majors were considered, then my request for a change of major never materialized, and I was accepted into my original first choice major, PetE.
Should I contact admissions?

@Nogarap you may want to check with admissions and see which version they tell you.

If first and second choice majors were in Cockrell they may have considered both. Between schools like Cockrell and CNS they may have considered just first choice. Call admissions though and check. We were told only first choice major was considered.

ChemE may have been tougher than PetE this year (seems like it was more in demand).

@EventHorizon32‌

I just contacted admissions and they said that I was considered for my second choice major only because they wanted me as a student but I didn’t have the stats for ChemE this year. This means that if UT admissions really wanted a student, they wouldn’t penalize said student just because the major chosen was overtly competitive. I am really thankful right now that I got in because I know the competition was tough this year.

@Nogarap I’m glad you were considered and got in.

My son got CAP and we are appealing the decision since his transrcipt was incorrect (GPA, ranking and service hours) . Anyone know how long does it take for the appeal process to be completed? He is applying to CNS - Neuroscience.

@snowchocolate- As a parent, I can’t imagine not checking my child’s app for completion. This is too important, not to do any double checking in my opinion and then for them to turn around and tell you it’s your own fault sort of adds insult to injury. I don’t micro manage my kids lives, but parents not double checking college apps is pretty surprising to me. My oldest go into McCombs and my middle child just got Capped :frowning:

For what it’s worth, we used a college prep person that helped with test prep, applications and essays and she said except for majors within the same college, 2nd choice majors are never considered at UT. I’m curious if anyone has ever gotten a second choice computer science major (1st choice engineering)?

@minka14 back off. That was way out of line.

I think it’s out of line to tell other members what they should and should not post. I’m sure there are moderators for that.

@minka14 better than telling people how they should and should not parent

It’s fine to disagree that his parents had any responsibility in it. That’s your opinion, not mine.

I also have a high stats, auto admit child who was denied by Cockrell. What is the list of available majors that these top students will be able to pick from on 2/26? I have not been able to talk to my student about it–sensitive subject right now…
