UT Austin Class of 2021 Thread

@sean191297 Bro I can’t stop myself from asking, if it’s so CLEARLY mentioned on their main website that international applicants should expect decisions around mid april, why do you keep asking then?

Let go people…We all know that most of the times we ask to ease the stress not to get the exact info. I mean, we are constantly asking each other to “Chance” etc. All of this means nothing but it just makes the wait easier. I bet the stress is10 folds more for international applicants. Let’s chill, two more weeks and we will all be outta here

@ad93107 That’s what I’ve just said… I did not ask them when International applicants should expect decisions. I just wanted to know why some received their decisions earlier than others (some being in-state and OOS) and if majority of the decisions would be given out on the specific date such as 17th Feb. That’s all. I apologize for ruining the thread. Sorry.

@sean191297 You didn’t ruin the thread.
Can we just keep things civil and on topic, guys? Things have been pretty okay so far. Let’s just keep rooting for and supporting one another.

My daughter, OOS just received admittance to T & Dance and now has all the tabs including next steps. It happened sometime late yesterday.

@EmpirestateDad That’s my fear. He applied for Computer Engineering as his first choice and Unspecified Business as his 2nd. He would be happy with either. UB would indicate that he is applying to McCombs. McCombs requires that you select them as your first choice for consideration. So, we selected 2 of the 3 hardest schools to get into and one of them he isn’t even eligible for because it’s his second choice. I have some friends whose kid got accepted to UT provided that they were willing to change their major. They weren’t auto-admits but had some pretty stellar ACT scores despite average transcripts. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that getting into Cockrell as an in-state applicant is hard enough but as an OOS there is only a remote shot. His grades are excellent, his test scores are average and he only has a summer’s worth of interning experience. It’s going to be pretty tough unless the essays sway them. (They were pretty good)

We’re going to start applying for UTD as they have rolling admissions. If CE is really what he wants to do, then we had better ensure that he applies ASAP to secure his spot.

I still see 5 tabs in his portal. Financial Aid is still showing

@spankytoes we did UTD for my d as a safety too. Your s can always transfer after his freshmen year to UT. Actually, no matter where he studies CE, he’ll be fine. He should apply to UTD asap.

I wouldn’t stress too much about the financial aid tabs not being there but who knows. My son’s portal has had the “Request admissions recommendations” note since day one even though he uploaded 2 recommendation letters through the document upload system as instructed. Not real impressed.

Overall my son has applied to Purdue, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M and been accepted to all of those schools engineering programs as well as engineering honors. I will say that I think the UT admissions process has been by far the worst experience of all of the schools he has applied to. Not that it is bad just not the best of the ones he has applied. He isn’t an auto-admit and he is still waiting on his decision from UT. When two schools that I would consider at the worst at the same level and arguably better engineering schools can get their decisions for qualified candidates done earlier and communicate better it leaves an impression on you. Of course that impression could also be influenced by his decision to attend A&M…‘saw em off’

@txsker not sure it’s fair to compare A&M admissions which is formula based and doesn’t admit into a particular engineering discipline with UT’s which is holistic? From your list, UT Austin and Purdue attract a national applicant pool due to their engineering rankings across all engineering disciplines so it probably is relevant to compare Purdue and UT admissions. Purdue did provide EA decisions in Dec and defer many so it is not that different from UT which also admitted some early (Dec) and effectively deferred the rest. Congrats on A&M!

@spankytoes I understand the dilemma you are going thru. Here is what I found out by talking to lot of folks about Cockrell and CNS. Cockrell requires that students apply to them as their first choice to be even considered for Engineering. McCombs suggests the samething. I also found out that 2nd choice at UT is probably not very significant and it is just a placeholder.

@CollegeParent123 Texas A&M new dean of the COE came from Purdue so they have in fact moved to a holistic review approach for all applicants into the COE and they are admitted into FYE/General Engineering and have to apply into their engineering discipline beginning the end of their freshman year in the program. I would argue that UT admissions are more formula based now than either A&M or Purdue. In all honesty the only reason UT seems more selective in their admissions to engineering is because their program is half the size of A&M’s and smaller than Purdue’s as well. With that said I don’t see that UT offers any benefits of smaller class sizes or a higher professor to student ratio than those schools.

Don’t get me wrong. UT has a great engineering program but the size of their program keeps many great and qualified students from being a part of it. I’m sure that is by design on UT’s part I just don’t see how that benefits the population they are supposed to be serving as a public university. I think Texas A&M and Purdue have it right here and are proof that you can have a large program while maintaining academic excellence.

@TxSker - I do have same feeling with UT Admissions. In-state non-auto admit (8%) awaiting since September. We don’t need monthly installments!!! Just have couple of dates to announce all admission decisions. Example UIUC had announced decision dates well in advance (one EA and one RD dates). Some of the high stat In-state kids (top 2%) are already committing to OOS schools with good merit packages.

My child got into UIUC CS but UT is his first choice and still waiting!!!

@ACT2017 my son got into UIUC (engineering) as well, did your child hear about financial aid there? I went through all of this last year with my daughter getting into UT but she was auto admit because she went to a different high school and is a psychology major, this time is not fun so stressful.

@TxSker, @ACT2017 - congratulations on getting accepted into UIUC.

Did you get any scholarships at UIUC ? it seems to me that there are very few OOS scholarships at UIUC, given it is IL public schools. My son got into CS @UIUC as well, hence this question. I personally find UIUC handled the admission process more smoothly and better compared to UT.

sorry I meant to ask @amottmers instead

Has anyone heard back for the COLA Major Bachelor of Science in Psychology?

@amottmers & @bz3mvl Not expecting any aid or scholarship.

@sean191297: Generally, you will receive a decision no later than:

Summer/Fall (Freshmen):
March 1
International Applicants: Mid-April
This is what on the website, and I think you might get decision earlier than mid April.

@bz3mvl I think it went more smoothly as well, they seem to have a better system in place. We haven’t heard yet regarding scholarships or financial aid. My son got into the University of Colorado Boulder and received the Presidential scholarship which helps but not much (still waiting to hear about financial aid from them as well)
