Seeking information on OOS financial aid at UT Austin. What can one expect?
DD applied hoping for a 40 acres scholarship (only 1 or 2 of those go to OOS kids) or an OOS tuition waiver (I’ve heard only about 1 of those are available to the entire freshman class). She is a high stats kids and did not get either. We knew it was a long shot. Feel bad that we took an Engineering spot from somebody else in the process.
DD has too many other great options with scholarships that UT-Austin without a scholarship just isn’t financially responsible.
I think a lot of people have shared on this website that UT doesn’t give much aid at all to OOS students. That was certainly true in my son’s case, even though he had high stats.
Nor will OOS students receive aid from UVA or Michigan (other than through their flagship scholarships (Jefferson, 40 Acres) …this is from experience…unfortunately even though these state schools compete for the same kids as the selective private universities, they can’t offer what private schools can. Fortunately, out of state tuition is still less than private with no aid.
Does UVA or Michigan follow the output from the net price calculator?
It makes sense. UT is overflowing with qualified in-state applicants and can’t take all would like to attend.
Michigan did not come close to our NPC. they were less than 33% of what we were projected to receive.
Don’t despair yet on OOS merit scholarships. I had read all the same data, but we liked UT and the EE/Plan II option. True, UT as a university does not offer too many game-changing scholarships, but academic colleges / departments do.
I was fully expecting Cockrell to give him a decent scholarship (Maybe robotics) and accept him into Engineering Honors. Neither happened.
Plan II however ended up being the surprise with what amounts to a full scholarship. YMMV. But had we not gone on the journey, my son would be at Duke with $75k/yr price tag vs being ridiculously educated at UT with two degrees and a scholarship.
Make sure to submit the honors applications on time for those wanting to enter in future years.
Thanks for the valuable input. It appears your son must have strong credentials. Would it be possible for you to share some info. on your son’s background SAT, GPA and ECA highlights.
