Lets say a student gets accepted into the engineering school, how fast can one transfer into a different school, specifically the natural science, moody communications or liberal arts school? Can it be done easily before student orientation when choosing classes or a transfer request should be done as soon as one gets accepted into UT?
You’ll want to discuss with an academic advisor of course. In general, it is far easier to move from Cockrell or McComb’s into one of the other schools, very straightforward, not much issue and quick. Going from Moody or Liberal Arts into Cockrell or McComb’s is far more difficult and mostly doesn’t happen.
UT Austin requires all students to stay in their original major during their first year, and the earliest that first-year students may apply to the Moody College is their second semester at UT Austin. So, the answer to both of your questions is no.
But if you would like to transfer, my advice would be to take easy classes/classes related to the major you want to transfer into and get excellent grades in them. If you’re transferring into the colleges you mentioned, having a 4.0 (or anything above a 3.7) during your first semester should mean you will be fine.
Honestly, as a freshman, having to wait a year is not a big deal, because you’ll be finishing most of your required core classes during your first year anyways, and you won’t really be taking any significant major-specific classes.
Would my chances of getting accepted be hurt if i called the office to change my major now or should I wait to get accepted and then talk an advisor?
I’m sorry, I’m out of state and a lot of schools in my area and other universities I applied to are not as restrictive and allow students two years to take courses before declaring a major, and they do not have as many undergraduate schools as UT does. I did not realize UT expected their students to pick a major and stay with it all four years of college or that it was hard to do an internal transfer. UT is one of my top choice, but I’m also worried I might be stuck at a school I don’t like, especially engineering if I end up not liking it and do poorly in my courses, I might not have a high enough gpa to transfer out. Mccombs is my first choice (and if I get in there I will have no problem, I really want to do business) and I put engineering as my second because I have high math testing scores, I’m a female, and a have lot of stem in my ec’s and transcript, but now I’m worried since oos is competitive, I should have applied to natural science or liberal arts (econ major) to have a better chance of getting accepted (and it would have been something i liked too, not a random major) and because I’m not 100% sure i want to pursue engineering. I love stem, which is why i applied engineering, but now I’m having my doubts, but it’s a little too late since I can’t change my major on the mystatus page.
What do you think? Should I wait for my acceptance then talk to an advisor (b/c i feel like switching me out of engineering would be easier since its a tough major) or talk to an advisor right now before my admissions release? Would it hurt my chances if I call them to change my major after the deadline has passed b/c it will seem like I’m switching into an “easier major” to increase my chances of getting accepted?
Wait for acceptance before changing. You can probably change it when you do get accepted and in the worst case scenario you stay in engineering for a semester or two, but you’re still taking intro courses that aren’t required for your major.
@longhorns1080 Got it, thank you!!
@whs2000 did you get in? Have you started the transfer process?
